Why is a car battery so heavy?

The car batteries are so heavy and big because the starter motor, when starting a cold automobile engine, will require a few hundred amps of current from the battery. Further, proper internal wiring and connectors of sufficient size are also required that allow the current to pass to the battery terminals. Nowadays these batteries have been designed in a lighter way with the help fo plastic cases but the basic design of the deep-cycle batteries is the same as they were in the early 20th century.
If the lead plates in the battery had a larger surface area, all other things being same, a battery could produce more current in a shorter period of time. Therefore, batteries have been designed with battery plates that were "foamed" instead of solid lead, so the weight is a little reduced.
These batteries were introduced into cars and they were perfect for providing a huge jolt of amperage all at once but the demand for such batteries is not good. These batteres weigh less--but but sometimes their discharge may cause the plates to be damaged.
The lead batteries require that much size to generate a good amount of current needed to turn the engine over to start. However, the advances in electronics have led to the designing of parts that do not require as much current to run, so even if the batteries are made smaller, it will generate sufficient current.
Also, Car batteries use lead plate technology which is cheap and easily accessible as compaed to he modern lithium ion batteries that are yet to be introduced into cars. Therefore, since even in the 21st century the lead batteries are most often used in the cars, the battery weighs more and occupies the maximum weight of a car.
Does heavy car battery have better quality?
The quality of batteries depends on its design and whether it can handle difficult work and heavy tasks. The term heavy-duty means it is made to handle heavy tasks and is designed from stronger equipment. However, not all lead batteries are heavy duty. So the quality depends o how the manufacturer constructs the battery and the capacity of the battery.
