How to Recharge AA Batteries Without a Charger - Charging Methods

Jun 21, 2021   Pageview:6271

Do you use devices such as remote controls and clocks? If so, then you might be familiar with AA batteries; after all, the battery is the one that gives those devices power to work. Seeing how AA batteries are pretty common, it is important for us to know the battery better especially if we want to know when it will run out. What are AA batteries, and can we charge them after the energy is finished? Check out all about AA batteries in this article below!

Can you recharge regular AA batteries?

Before we know how to charge AA batteries, it’s important to know what they are.

What are AA batteries?

AA batteries are batteries that are commonly used for portable devices. Their length can be up to 49.2–50.5 mm in size, and their diameter is around 13.5–14.5 mm. An AA battery usually has a single electrochemical cell. The chemical inside the batteries differ depending on the type, and the amount of volt depends on the said chemical.

Alkaline AAA Batteries

Here are some examples of AA batteries:

Because alkaline AAA batteries are so prevalent, they may be found almost anywhere. It comes at a reasonable cost. However, it performs admirably as a battery. It has a voltage of 1.5V and an usual mAh of 850-1200.

It's worth noting that most batteries aren't rechargeable, so you'll have to buy replacements. However, some are rechargeable; whether or not they are rechargeable is indicated on their box.

Nickel Oxy-Hydroxide AAA Batteries

Nickel Oxy-Hydroxide is a kind of nickel oxide. AAA batteries, often known as NiOOH batteries, are essentially alkaline batteries with an additional element. Nickel oxyhydroxide is the other component. The battery's maximum voltage may now be increased to 1.7V. Because of its extremely high maximum voltage. NiOOH batteries are frequently employed in equipment that consume a lot of power, such as cameras.

Apart from the maximum voltage, NiOOH batteries have a capacity that is comparable to that of alkaline batteries. NiOOH batteries are likewise non-rechargeable, so you'll need to stock up on spares.

Charging AA batteries: Yes or No?

From the examples of the batteries, we can see that most AA batteries are non-rechargeable. Some of them are rechargeable, and you will see it on their package.

Can you put non rechargeable batteries in a charger?

It is not recommended to put non rechargeable batteries in a charger, as it can actually damage the batteries. If you do it, you will have to go through several consequences, such as:

Overheat

If you try to charge a non-rechargeable battery, it will result in overheating and increase the temperature of the battery. It is a fact that batteries are sensitive when it comes to heat and other things related to temperature. Moreover, if the heat keeps increasing, it can lead to several negative consequences we will mention next. Hence, it’s best not to charge a non-rechargeable battery.

Leakage or Explosion

If the temperature of the battery keeps increasing, it can lead to leakage. The leakage happens because the seal of the battery will break. This can increase the risk of leakage, and the chemical inside the battery can spill. To make matters worse, there is always a chance for the chemical to spread, catch fire, or even result in explosion. Hence, if you see tutorials about batteries, they always tell you to do the experiment on an empty field so no item will catch fire.

Attempting to recharge non rechargeable batteries can lead to much damage, so it is best not to do so. However, if you are in a pinch, you can give the battery one last push.

How do you charge a battery naturally?

There are several ways to “revive” a battery even when they’re dead. Here are some ways to do it:

Warming the Battery

Yes, you can push the battery one more time by warming it up. It is widespread knowledge that warming a dead battery can bring it back to life for one last time, allowing it to be used again.

Warm the battery by placing it between your palms and rubbing it vigorously as if you were warming yourself. If you don't have any, you can tuck it inside your garments and leave it on your skin for 10 minutes.

Metal Barbeque Clamp

Do you have a metal barbeque clamp that is unused at home? Well, it’s time to use it again now. No, we’re not going to make a barbecue with it; we will be warming batteries with the clamp!

Doing it is simple. A clean and dry metal BBQ clamp, a dead battery, and a charged battery of the same type as the dead battery are all you'll need.

The steps are straightforward. To begin, ensure that the flat sides of both batteries are aligned. Put the two batteries (in the same position) between the clamps and press them together once they're done. To ensure that the negative portions are in touch, you must also keep them together. Do this for a minute or thirty seconds.

Release the batteries after one minute. A little quantity of energy should be gained by the dead battery, which can be used in emergency scenarios.

Lemon Juice

Lemon juice helps revive alkaline AAA batteries that haven't been used in a long time. It possesses features that make it easier for the electrons to flow again, allowing the battery to regain its energy (at least 85 percent of its energy back).

To use lemon juice, just immerse the AAA battery in lemon juice for one hour. Allow it to dry after that. The battery has been charged and is ready to use!

AA batteries are batteries that are still useful today. They are commonly used for several devices that need energy, and you can see them being sold in the supermarket. However, they cannot be recharged (unless stated so), and attempting to recharge them will lead to fatal results. Hence, it is recommended to purchase a new battery when a AA battery is dead. However, you can try to “revive” them one more time naturally. Doing so will make the battery work for an extra time, after that, no more. So, take care of your battery and treat them preciously!
