Hybrid Car Batteries Costs-Introduction, Cost and Safety

Jun 08, 2021   Pageview:532

A hybrid car battery is similar to a simple ordinary battery except of the fact that it can be recharged. These batteries have much potential to move a large heavy vehicle down the road for a few feet or a few miles. The construction of hybrid car batteries is very simple. It uses two electrodes ( as all other batteries use) that are responsible for collecting or emitting the charged particles. The hybrid car battery pack is positioned behind the back seats of the cars. These electrodes are set very close to each other so there are huge chances that the two electrodes touch each other and create short circuiting. To avoid such inconvenience, a thin separator is used between these electrodes that separates them. This separator is usually a polymer film.

The one electrode has its ionized elements in a chemical state so that they can be  attracted easily and readily to combine with other molecules by emitting electrons (in the form of energy) in the process. These ionized elements are pulled hardly and suddenly through the electrolyte and the separator in the direction of the opposing electrode. The ions of the negative electrode (anode) emits electrons and the positive ions coming from the positive electrode (cathode) towards the anode accept them. The electrons emitted by this process goes through the external circuit for example your mobile phone. This establishes a flow of charge in the direction that is opposite to the flow of ions.

During the recharge process the electric current is forced into the cell that reverses the whole process. When it comes to fuel consumption the vehicles that use hybrid batteries are very efficient. Although all hybrid cars consists of a lead-acid battery in addition to a NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride) battery but still they use less fuel as compared to other batteries because of the NiMh battery.

These batteries are commonly used in the manufacturing of hybrid cars by the Toyota car brand. The whole hybrid battery pack of the Toyota Prius is mainly comprised of 28 Panasonic prismatic nickel metal hydride modules. Each of them contains six 1.2 volt cells. These cells are connected in series to produce a nominal voltage of 201.6 volts. The total number of cells is 168 and the total weight of the battery is 53.3 kg.

The voltage in hybrid car batteries is D.C (Direct current) that is more effective than A.C ( Alternating current). This high voltage D.C secondary ignition system can give you a great electric shock and the current is normally too low that it can cause serious harm. To reduce these risks you should have the awareness of potential shock. Moreover it can also be reduced by following the standard safety procedure and charging the battery at least for one time in every two months by starting the hybrid system for about 30 minutes.

Hybrid car batteries are comparatively expensive than other batteries used in normal vehicles. They can range anywhere from 1,000$ to more than 6,000$. The price factors depend on the year and the model of the car.

Is it worth replacing hybrid batteries ?

When it comes down to replacing the hybrid batteries the?hybrid battery replacement?cost is incredibly high which is not affordable for every one. Driving the car until the battery is fully depleted and any kind of accident or damage will surely reduce the overall health of the hybrid battery.

The longevity of these batteries decrease by constantly filling the battery up to 100-percent charge as it causes a great thermal load. Although hybrid batteries are environment friendly and very efficient but like other batteries, hybrid batteries also die or go bad so you'll need to replace them otherwise you may face bad fuel economy, extremely quick battery depletion, electrical fluctuations, bad and inconvenient driving conditions.

How long hybrid batteries last in hybrid cars?

The hybrid car batteries can only perform as intended if all of the cells and modules in the battery pack share both charging and discharging loads equally. Researches have shown that these batteries contain a very high voltage and are very costly that makes them unreliable as there are risks for short circuiting also. Hybrid batteries are prone to premature failures.

The manufacturers of hybrid vehicles in the United states of America's domestic market are legally required to warrant high-voltage hybrid battery for at least 8 years or after use of 1,00,000 miles. However, ten year warranty (1,50,000 miles of use)  technology was recently used to develop Toyota Pirus (late model).

Can you still drive a car without battery?

Hybrid cars provide the owner with benefits such as better fuel efficiency and lower environmental emissions. The engine of these cars work on two different batteries one is the normal car battery and the other is the secondary battery that deals with electric motor of the engine for making the overall vehicle fuel efficient. These hybrid vehicles are made very efficient that if the battery dies or does not function properly you can still drive the car but it will be a little less smooth as compared to a hybrid car with a proper battery system. The hybrid systems that require a 12 volt battery do not function if the battery dies.

Conclusion

Hybrid batteries are environment friendly as they comparatively produce less CO2 emissions which means less dependence on fossil fuels. This, as a result also helps to reduce the price of gasoline in the domestic market. In abroad many cities are replacing their?public transportation?and normal vehicles to hybrid cars and buses to become more environmentally responsible.

But the major drawback of the vehicles that use hybrid batteries is lack of awareness about how a hybrid vehicle functions or works.  Lighter energy is required to run them as these hybrid batteries and cars are made up of lighter materials. If they are not handled properly they can also cause many serious accidents or damages to lives as the battery has a very high voltage that increases the chances of short circuiting.

Hybrid cars are expensive than a normal petrol car but these vehicles are now being supported by many incentives to make them affordable.
