All you have to do is plug in your hybrid or lithium-ion car batteries into your electric or hybrid vehicle and it offers a good driving range.

It is the most obvious solution to jumpstart a battery or recharges it using a car battery charger that is the most obvious solution.

With a car battery charger being available at higher prices and not being affordable for most what most people end up doing is to go for a replacement and buy a new car battery.

But that is not of course the best possible solution. Here we will give you a new idea of battery reconditioning and how to bring back a dead battery into life.

So what is battery reconditioning?

When you charge a car battery there is a process of sulfation that is occurring on the electrodes of the battery. The higher the sulfate crystals are formed the more it takes for your battery to charge.

What most people don’t know that this sulfation process actually increases the charging time of the battery and also reduces the charging efficiency meaning not only more time taken to charge the battery but degraded battery performance that gradually occurs over time whenever you recharge your car battery.

The reconditioning process cleans up this formation of the sulfation process while also replenishing the electrolytic solution from time to time.

This allows the battery to recharge as if it were a new battery. This leads to less time taken for battery recharge as well as more efficiency and good health of your car battery even after multiple recharging.

Does battery recondition really work?

Generally, those car batteries that are undergoing huge corrosion or those with an internal mechanical defect will mean that battery reconditioning better be left out and such a batter is replaced.

How do you bring your car battery back to life?

You can apply the car battery reconditioning process as mentioned below. But before you do that here is what you should know before bringing a malfunctioning or dead car battery back to life-

Clean the terminals of the battery

it might be that there is a layer of rust on them that is preventing a proper connection. You can clean the battery terminals using a solution of baking soda and water.

Checking the voltage

You can connect your car battery to a voltmeter and check the readings. If it is lower than 10 volts this means that your battery is not worth charging anymore as it is out of its life. Anywhere between 10 volts to 12 volts means that there is a chance that battery reconditioning will work again.

Clean the battery acid

You can clean the battery acid after gently pouring the battery acid into a bucket.  All you have to do is neutralize the acid using a baking soda solution that you can make at home.

Cleaning the cells of your car battery

The cells of the car battery can be cleaned by emptying the car battery cells in a bucket containing baking soda solution. Ensure that the car batteries are cleaned properly and that there is no fluid on the surface of the car batteries before fitting them back again into the car battery.

Recharge the reconditioned battery

Ensure that now when the battery reconditioning process is complete you connect it with a battery charger and then recharge the battery at least for 10 hours.

How do you restore your car battery properly?

If you are finding means on how to do battery reconditioning at home here is a small guide that you can use and avoid extra cost being spend on going to hire a car servicing agency.

It is important to undergo a visual inspection of the battery to check out the battery health from outside before you go for battery reconditioning each time.

What you should be aware of are the cracks, battery bulging, and broken battery pieces of any type.

More importantly, the items needed for reconditioning your car battery can be easily found at home. Doing it the first time you will need to have the following list of equipment at your home-

  • Toothbrush

  • Steel wool or a battery terminal cleaner

  • Flathead screwdriver

  • Funnel

  • Buckets

  • Distilled or clean water

  • baking soda

  • Epsom salt

  • Battery charger

  • Voltmeter

And of course, remember to wear protective equipment during the entire process.

  • Make the cleaning solution using a 2:1 ratio of baking soda and water that will serve as your battery leaning agent.

  • Cleaning the battery that requires you to apply the cleaning paste on the electrodes and scrubbing them with a toothbrush. For heavily corrosion affected batteries you can use steel wool.

  • You can then check out the voltage readings of your battery by connecting it to a voltmeter. If it reads between 10 volts to 12 volts then it's best to recondition your car battery.

  • With readings less than 10 volts, it is better to go for battery replacement.

  • Remove the car battery out of the car and open the terminals to empty the internal contents. You can neutralize the car battery using a baking soda solution.

  • Use a funnel to gently pour the baking soda solution on the car battery cells. Shake well for a minute or two and then take out the car battery cells.

  • Now make a 1:1 solution using Epsom salt and water in a bucket and enter the car battery cells into this new electrolytic solution.

  • Now recharge your battery using a maximum output voltage of 12 volts and a current of 2 amps.

It is now time to test your battery by placing and fitting it with the car.
