Do AGM Batteries Need to be Vented: Introduction and Vent Holes

Jul 23, 2021   Pageview:1987

An AGM battery is a type of automobile battery that is meant to do two things: produce high starting amps and run electronics for a long period of time. It is a common battery used by many people, and you might be one of those people too. In this article, we will discuss the ventilation method and see whether AGM batteries should be vented or not.

Before we delve into the topic further, let’s talk about AGM batteries. What are AGM batteries?

Absorbent (or Absorbed) Glass Mat is the abbreviation for Absorbent (or Absorbed) Glass Mat (or Material). It's a 12-volt vehicle battery that can replace typical flooded lead-acid batteries.

The use of AGM batteries is quite complex. Positive and negative lead and lead oxide plates on the interior of a battery attract or release electrons when they react with an electrolyte, which is generally sulfuric acid and water. AGM batteries use microscopic glass fibers to retain and suspend the electrolyte mixture while ensuring even contact with the active lead elements on the plates. For a total of 12 volts, electrons travel in a series circuit via six cells, each of which runs at roughly 2 volts.

AGM batteries eliminate leakage, a fundamental problem with flooded batteries, but they come with their own drawbacks.

There are several advantages of AGM batteries. Unlike ordinary lead-acid batteries, which allow water to readily flood their electrodes, AGM batteries use glass mats to keep this from happening. Instead of absorbing the electrolyte, the glass mats retain it in place, preventing it from spilling over, even when the battery is positioned in unusual orientations.

The internal resistance of AGM batteries is extremely low due to their unique construction. As a result, they are able to supply adequate bursts of power when needed, such as when starting a battery. These batteries respond to loading better than any other battery on the market because of this characteristic.

The third advantage is its charging time. When compared to flooded batteries, AGM batteries charge fast. While compared to flooded batteries of the same capacity, the charging rate can be up to five times quicker when using the same power source.

What about its drawbacks? Although these AGM batteries have a high power output, their specific energy is low. A high specific load is often necessary for batteries that must run for an extended period of time under a moderate load. As a result, these batteries cannot be used in multiple devices.

Furthermore, AGM batteries hold a charge for longer than other batteries, although their charging capability progressively decreases over time. This is in contrast to gel batteries, which have a competitive edge in this market due to their superior performance.

Its pros and cons bring us to the question: do AGM car batteries need to be vented? Is this a drawback for the battery, or not?

The answer is yes, they still need to be vented. This is because of the fact that AGM batteries are a form of valve-regulated lead acid battery. They're "maintenance-free" in the sense that they don't need water to compensate for hydrogen gas produced during the charging process. The battery's glass mat absorbs the hydrogen generated, preventing it from escaping into the environment and remaining inside the battery.

To summarize, a ventilation system is required to prevent the battery from exploding.

Do agm batteries have vent holes?

Contrary to some people’s beliefs, many AGM batteries include a small vent (very small hole) and thin rubber tubing that you may connect to a small hole that vents to the outside.

Let's take a look at Miata AGM batteries as an example. The battery featured two small holes on top, joined by two little rubber tubes, which merged into a small plastic junction when it was placed in the trunk. Then, from the connection, a single tiny tube ran down the side of the trunk to a small hole in the wheel well. The plan was to send any gas outdoors rather than into the trunk.

Do agm batteries need to be upright?

The AGM and Gel batteries may be placed on their sides without difficulty, but not on their backs. Because of the liquid inside, this is the case. Because the liquid electrolyte within traditional batteries flows freely, they must be installed and kept upright to avoid leaking.

Besides positioning the battery at the right position, there are other methods we must keep in mind in order to maintain AGM batteries properly. First is the storage. Always remember to recharge your AGM battery while keeping it for prolonged periods of time.

Make sure your battery is stored in a cool, dry location with plenty of ventilation. Sulfation will occur if your battery is left drained for long periods of time. After all, when sulfuric acid in lead-acid batteries reacts, particularly on the negative plate, it forms lead sulfate, which causes sulfation. The ability of the battery to keep a charge is impaired by sulfation.

Second, make sure the battery isn't overcharged. Overcharging might harm the internal components of your AGM battery. Similarly, undercharging might shorten the longevity of an AGM battery. Determine the right voltage as specified in the manufacturer's instructions to charge your AGM battery successfully. To charge your AGM battery, avoid using a typical fuel generator.

Third, always use the recommended charger. According to the manufacturer, every AGM battery has a recommended charger. The manufacturer's charger guarantees that the AGM battery receives the required voltage without being undercharged or overcharged. Sulfation of your AGM battery might occur if the improper charger is used.

Ventilation plays a significant role at maintaining AGM batteries properly. Besides ventilation, storage, charging, and sulfation avoidance are all important factors in the AGM battery's longevity. Your AGM battery will also require a manufacturer-recommended charger, which may vary depending on the battery.

If you properly take care of your AGM battery, your battery will definitely last for a long time.
