A dead car battery is not only woeful and a bitter experience for every car owner. Especially if it occurs in the middle of the road and if you have an important day ahead. Thanks to the latest advancement in car technologies, now you won’t have to face this nightmarish experience anymore.

Car jumper cables help you to easily start your car, and possibly you will be on your way to work at the next minute. A flat or a dead battery is an indication of an empty battery. This means you cannot start the car battery even after you jump-start it. Moreover, you won’t be able to start the audio system in your car.

This is the reason that many car experts believe that you should drive your car for at least half an hour after jump-start. This half-and-hour duration ensures that the alternator can add some more liquid into the battery. This also ensures that you can switch start the ignition for your next drive.

How long does a Car Battery Last Without Driving?

The battery is an important component of a car. The primary function of the car battery is to transform chemical energy into electrical energy. This electrical energy is necessary for you to start the car after you switch on the ignition. The other key function of the battery is to keep the vehicle in sustainable condition.

The battery also powers the other components for lighting that includes the alarm clock and the radio systems of your car. The other reason for the battery going dead is that you do not require the vehicle to drive all the time, making it idle sometimes. This leads to the draining of the battery even if it’s sitting idle for a longer duration. The accessories of your car, such as the clock, radio, and other components, tend to consume the battery even in idle condition.

Hence, the answer to this question will last for two weeks, even if you don’t need to start your car or recharge the battery. However, whatever the reason for your not driving the vehicle, you should start the car atleast once a week to recharge the car’s battery.

For this purpose, many car experts believe that you should drive it once a week to avoid the battery going dead. Although, it does not matter what model car model you own, or how old it is. Whenever you drive your car for at least 15 minutes, the alternator of your car recharges the battery. This helps in keeping the vehicle in good condition even when you are not using it regularly.

Moreover, if the battery of your vehicle is relatively new and in pristine condition, it will last for 3 months before going dead. An idle car battery also does not help your cause, making it difficult to start your car the next time. But you need to keep in mind that every car is different, along with the manufacturer of the car’s battery. This is the reason that you need to ensure to switch off all the lighting systems of your car, even in idle condition. The batteries that have experienced troubleshoot issues might die off pretty quickly instead of newer batteries.

How long will a Car Battery last without Charge?

The battery constitutes a crucial part of your car. It supplies electricity to the other essential components, such as the radio, clock, dashboard, and alarm systems. Moreover, you need to start your vehicle along with serving the alternative source of power when the cars’ alternator is not functioning properly.

Regardless of the model of your car, and year of purchase, the longevity of an average car battery is about 5 years. However, that too comes depends on how well you maintain it and conduct yearly services. Proper maintenance can improve the longevity of your car drastically. Sometimes it may increase its lifespan up to 7 years or more.

The common question that every car owner asks is how much the battery can last, even without charge? This is dependent upon how well you maintain the charge of the battery, along with the optimal temperature at which the battery is stored. In frigid temperatures or sub-zero temperatures, an average car battery will tend to discharge faster as compared to a battery kept at normal temperatures. The battery that is left to die in cold conditions over a longer period may die relatively faster since the electrolytes reduce drastically. This reduction results in the crystallization process of the electrolytes, along with bringing adverse effects on the plates.

To understand this equation, suppose your battery has a capacity of 60 A/h, simply divide 50 by 3.3 that will give you the result as 18Ah. This is the minimum value at which your car battery should be in working condition. Now subtract this result from the equation and then divide the number by 0.01. Here is the example:

60A/h-18A/h = 42A/h

42A/h/0.01 = 4000 hours

4000 hours means your battery can hold a charge for 166 days (5 months, 2 weeks).

How long does it take to Charge a Car Battery after a Jump?

Using the alternator to recharge your car battery is not the best solution after all. The alternator of your car is designed to maintain the charge of the battery along with supplying electricity to the other components.

On the other hand, charging a flat battery can produce a high voltage of current. Even if, after jump-starting your vehicle it does not start, then it means that your battery is absolutely empty. This is the reason that you need to continue driving your vehicle after jump-starting for a minimum duration of half an hour. This helps in producing few amounts of electrolytes into the battery. This in turn leads to store the charge when you crank up your engine for your next trip. The main objective of jump-starting your vehicle offers the boost it needs to move the vehicle. From this situation, the alternator of your vehicle controls the entire situation, along with helping the engine to run smoothly.
