Restore Old Batteries - Introduction and Methods

Mar 29, 2022   Pageview:625

You can also restore and recondition an old battery, get it back to normal state again and manage to save money with some amount of effort. It is possible to get a completely functional battery once again when you have knowledge of how to go about the process. It is quite easy to restore old batteries actually and anybody can learn to do it.

Can You Restore Old Batteries?

The answer is yes. Do not be under the misassumption that when a battery is old it has to be discarded and you have to make expenses again, in order to purchase a brand new battery. Although this is one of the options to restore a fully functional battery, this is not the only way to try.

You only need a few devices and some time, to recover an old battery - which can save you money as well as save the resources of Mother Earth. You can actually make your old battery look and function just like a newly purchased one.

How to Restore Old Batteries Back to Life?

First and foremost, you have to assemble a few basic things, such as:

Cleaning tools

baking soda

Epsom salt

Distilled water

Buckets

Funnel

Basic tool kit

Jump starter

Voltmeter

Battery charger

Apron

Safety rubber gloves

Safety goggles etc.

During the entire process of restoration, you will need to use these things one by one, step by step.

First you have to clean up the battery terminals which are composed of metal and which often have a rusty layer on them. You have to prepare a baking soda and distilled water solution and use a clean brush to wipe the rust away.

Then you have to check the voltage with the help of a voltage meter. Connect your voltage meter with your battery terminals and note the reading. If you find that the reading is less than 12.6 V, restoration will help in your battery revival.

Then you have to clean up the battery acid and during this process you have to wear safety gloves apron and goggles to remain protected. Open up the battery lid with a screwdriver and pour the old battery acid out into plastic carefully. Put away the empty battery with care and add about half pound baking soda into the bucket, which is filled up with the old acid. The acid will be neutralized by the baking soda.

Then, you have to clean up the battery cells by preparing a mixture of distilled water and baking soda. Pour this solution into the battery cells with the help of a funnel. After the cells are filled up, shut the lids down and shake the battery for 1 hour 2 minutes - so that the inside of the batteries get cleansed by the solution. Once this is over, you have to empty the solution into some other bucket.

Then you have to restore the battery by preparing an electrolyte solution with a combination of half pound Epson salt in boiling distilled water. After the solution is clear, you can pour it into the cells of the battery with the help of a clean funnel. The cells need to be completely filled up and the lids must be closed down carefully. The ampere and the voltage which would be needed by your vehicle from the battery will be increased by the electrolyte solution.

Then you have to charge the restore battery by affixing proper terminals between your devices. Charge the battery slowly for an entire day.

Finally, you have to carry out a battery test by using a voltmeter and checking the battery voltage level. If you find that the reading is 12.4 V in the voltmeter, your battery restoration would be complete. If that is not the case, you should leave the charging for some other day until you can get 12.4 V reading.

Restore Old Car Batteries Using Alum

First, you should buy some amount of alum. For one battery, a one pound bag can be enough and it costs just 3 USD. Tap water can either be boiled for 10 minutes or 10 minutes or can be purchased and heated in a pot on the stove for some time.  You might like to pour all the contents of the one pound bag into water, and wait for it to dissolve.

Use a spoon to mix it all up, and ensure that the crystals have dissolved totally. Afterwards, a funnel should be used for pouring the water mixed with alum into the battery. Then, use it to fill up each of the 6 cell compartments. You should first let it cool for some time, particularly in case you boiled water. Else, the heat will melt your funnel.

When alum is used in the battery, it will become a crystal battery or lead alum battery. It will not remain a lead acid battery any more. Thus, the discharge properties will be a lot different. If you let them discharge under 12 volts on more than one occasion, the Lead acid batteries can get ruined. But with the lead alum batteries, this is not the case.

These will never stand at 12 volts, and these will get discharged all the way to zero due to the inherent properties, without causing any damage to them. The pattern of discharge will vary as well. The discharge crashes much faster in a lead acid battery, while there will be much slower discharge rate in case of a lead alum battery.

You can easily find that the amp capacity of alum batteries will not be as much as that of a regular car battery. The most wonderful thing about the process is the fact that batteries can be added in a parallel way, in order to create a big sized solar battery bank. You can find alum batteries lasting for an extremely long time to come, and very little maintenance will be needed for the same.
