Lead-acid Battery Tester Circuit

If you really want to be safe, grab a rubber apron as electrolyte solution could accidentally spill and burn through cotton shirts and pants. 

Prep. You'll want the car to be properly ventilated. If you're going to be testing the battery in your garage, open up the doors and windows. If you're working outside, make sure there are plenty of airflows. You should also have a fire extinguisher on hand, just in case. Make sure to turn off the car and pop the hood.

Remove. Once you have your safety gear on and the car is prepped, you need to remove the battery from the vehicle. Since you'll want to test all the cells, remove the cover and cap from the battery and the top layer of insulation to expose the electrolyte solution beneath.

Insert the Hydrometer. Once you have removed the battery, you need to find the electrolyte level indicator. To use a hydrometer, you will need to take a sample of the electrolyte from the battery. The sample can be taken from the top of the battery, or it can be taken from the bottom of the battery. 

If you are taking a sample from the top of the battery, you will need to remove the cap that covers the opening, if you haven't already. If you are taking a sample from the bottom of the battery, you will need to remove the cover that is over the vent hole.

Once you have removed the cap, you can place the hydrometer into the electrolyte. The float will then settle, and the specific gravity will be read from the scale. 

If you are using an automatic hydrometer, you will need to place the electrode of the device into the electrolyte. The specific gravity will then be displayed on a screen. 

Read and write the measured cell values. When the battery's electrolyte level is low, it can be difficult to tell when the fluid has run out entirely. Check for a full bulb of electrolyte fluid, then measure the values shown on the device. Make sure to write this down! You will need to repeat this process for each cell in the battery since each one plays an important part in the battery life.

Calculate. You will need to calculate the average of all the cell readings in order to get an accurate idea of the battery's condition. The best way to do this is to add up all the readings and then divide by the number of cells. This will give you the average reading for the battery. 

Temperature also plays a role in calculations. You will need to adjust the readings according to the temperature chart that should have come with your hydrometer. 

Cleanup. After you have taken the specific gravity readings, you will need to clean up any electrolytes that may have spilled. You should also rinse off the hydrometer and the electrode if you are using an automatic hydrometer. 

Reinstall. Once you have cleaned up, you can reinstall the battery. Make sure to put the cover back on and secure the battery in its rightful place.
