Which is better, a lithium-ion battery or a LiFePO4 battery?

Jun 02, 2023   Pageview:164

Electrical devices consist of rechargeable batteries, so you can charge them and use those electronic devices repeatedly. We are talking about your cell phones, electronic toothbrushes, tablets, etc. Different electrical devices consist of different batteries. It might be a lithium-ion or LiFePO4 battery, but which option is better?

Lithium-ion batteries consist of advanced technology with lithium ions as its key component and the electro-chemistry it consists of. If you compare these batteries, then LiFePO4 then LiFePO4 is a better option for various reasons, but lithium-ion batteries are considerable for home usage.

What are lithium batteries and lithium iron phosphate batteries?

As mentioned above, lithium batteries are the ones you can find easily in your daily routine gadgets like cellphones, computers, etc. It consists of lithium-ions that create free electrons at the battery's anode. Further, it will create energy at the current collector point. Lithium batteries are a safe option because they are more prone to combustion than lithium-iron phosphate batteries.

lithium iron phosphate batteries, also known as LiFePO4, have a longer life span than lithium batteries. It is also a lithium-ion battery. Moreover, it uses lithium iron phosphate. It uses it as the cathode with a graphitic carbon electrode and a metallic backing as the anode.

You can find lithium-iron phosphate batteries in vehicles. You might have heard of EV vehicles that run on batteries. Those iron phosphate batteries give the engine enough kick so your vehicle runs.

Lithium Iron Phosphate Battery Characteristics

Before we end the debate about whether lithium iron phosphate batteries are better than any other available batteries, let's learn about their characteristics first. So, following are a few very basic characteristics of LiFePO4 batteries:

3.2V 20Ah Low Temperature Square LiFePO4 Battery Cell
3.2V 20A Low Temp LiFePO4 Battery Cell -40℃ 3C discharge capacity≥70% Charging temperature:-20~45℃ Discharging temperature: -40~+55℃ pass acupuncture test -40℃ maximum discharge rate:3C

High Battery Power Capacity

If we talk about more power capacity, then LiFePO4 is the option you need to consider. As we discussed, you can find these batteries in vehicles so that you can imagine their power capacity.

More Efficient With Minimal Heating

LiFePO4 has a higher power capacity, but they don't heat much. Most of the batteries get heated up and blast sometimes. In this case, both lithium-ion batteries and LiFePO4 both doesn't heat up must.

Lithium-ion batteries are a good option if you need them for your home, your ups, and other electronic devices. For vehicles, LiFePO4 is surely the best option with maximum power capacity, and they don't as well.

Enhanced Safety

In the above point, we discussed that LiFePO4 doesn't heat up while getting charged, making this point more reliable and safer. Batteries heat up badly, and eventually, they burst, which doesn't sound safe at all. If you want safety while choosing the batteries for your requirement, surely LiFePO4 is the number one option.

Longer Life Span

LiFePO4 surely has a longer lifespan because it has more charging cycles. You can compare the lifespan of a lithium iron phosphate battery with any other battery or even a lithium-ion battery. You will be amazed to know the answer.

The lifespan of LiFePO4 is five times more than lithium-ion batteries, and it doesn't require much maintenance. You just have to recharge it at the right time so it doesn't die.

How to choose a battery, lithium battery, or lithium iron phosphate battery?

You might be confused about choosing a lithium or lithium-iron-phosphate battery. As we have mentioned the characteristics of LiFePO4 above, let's compare both so you can get a final answer:

Low Temperature High Energy Density Rugged Laptop Polymer Battery 11.1V 7800mAh
Low Temperature High Energy Density Rugged Laptop Polymer Battery Battery specification: 11.1V 7800mAh -40℃ 0.2C discharge capacity ≥80% Dustproof, resistance to dropping, anti - corrosion, anti - electromagnetic interference

LiFePO4 offers better performance.

The performance is the factor you should compare between lithium battery and LiFePO4. LiFePO4 is more energy efficient, doesn't heat up, gets charged fast, and comes with higher voltage capacity. So the performance of LiFePO4 is better than lithium battery.

It depends on your requirement and why you need the battery in the first place. If you are considering the best option for your home, go for a lithium battery; otherwise, LiFePO4 is surely the best option.

Which has the value for money factor?

If you want a value-for-money factor with better performance, you can go for LiFePO4. Lithium batteries are a good option, but the durability of LiFePO4 is unmatchable. So if you want to do the right investment, then surely lithium iron phosphate is the best option.

It will be your one-time investment, so it is wise to consider all available options and select one. Surely, this point goes in favor of lithium-iron phosphate batteries.

LiFePO4 With a Longer Lifespan

The lifespan of lithium batteries is good, but if you want to go for a better option, LiFePO4 has a five times longer lifespan than lithium batteries. It has better performance and more safety features than any other batteries we can talk about. The advanced technology in LiFePO4 makes it a more reliable, durable, and long-lasting option.

LiFePO4 is a safer option.

Batteries sometimes blasts when they get overheated, but if we talk about LiFePO4, it is more prone to combustion. Lithium-iron phosphate batteries don't heat up much, so they don't burst often. It is obvious that if you would go for a safer option in the batteries, then LiFePO4 is safer than lithium batteries.

Lithium batteries heat up badly; you might have experienced this if your laptop gets heated up and other electric devices consist of lithium batteries.

LiFePO4 is more expensive.

Budget can be a problem when looking for the best option available. You can use a lithium battery if you have limited options because LiFePO4 is expensive. The price also depends on the size of the product, but if you compare the prices of lithium batteries and LiFePO4, lithium batteries are a cheaper option with quality performance.

Final Words:

Lithium-ion and LiFePO4 batteries both consist of tech that helps the electronic devices run. These batteries come in various sizes, and they both are rechargeable. LiFePO4 has a longer lifespan and can outrun lithium-ion batteries five times longer. So if you are looking for an option that lasts longer, go for LiFePO4, but lithium-ion batteries are a considerable option for reliability and safety.
