How to Rejuvenate Car Battery – Welder and Espsom Salt

There are many things that you can do to make your car run better, and one of them is rejuvenating your car battery. Car batteries are made from lead, sulfuric acid and water. Over time, the lead can start to break down, which cause corrosion and a sulfate will layer to build up on the lead plates. To get rid of this sulfate layer, you have to use a process called "rejuvenation." Rejuvenation takes time and patience, but it works wonders on your car's battery.

The first step in rejuvenating your battery is to remove the cables from the terminals. You'll also want to put a rag under the battery so that any excess acid doesn't run out onto your engine or drive train. The next step is to fill the battery with distilled water. If you don't have distilled water, then use regular tap water that has been left out for at least 24 hours in order to let any impurities evaporate out. Use a funnel or a hose-end sprayer for this part so you don't spill any of the water inside your battery casing. The final step is to keep adding distilled water until it covers all of the exposed lead plates inside the case of your battery.

How to Rejuvenate Car Battery with Welder? 

According to experts, a weak vehicle battery can be rejuvenated with a common welder. The process is particularly beneficial for batteries that are still capable of holding a charge but won't start the engine. The bad cells can be removed, while the good ones are transferred and held in place by the welder's wire.

The process works best on batteries that have been sitting for a long time but haven't completely lost their charge. To test whether your battery is capable of being revitalized, connect it to the terminals of another vehicle's battery and try to start it. If it does not start, the battery is not salvageable; if it does start, proceed with rejuvenating. 

The best way to rejuvenate a car battery (or any lead-acid battery) is to use a high-quality lead-acid battery charger, but since you probably don't have one of those, a welder is an alternative that is used more often than I can remember. It's not nearly as good as a charger, but it will give you some more time to get your dead battery to the auto parts store.

You can use a welder to jump-start your car's dead battery with minimal risk. You'll need to find a heavy-duty extension cord, one that can handle 10 amps). Other than that all you'll need is a clamps and a spark plug socket/extension. In this regard, the spark plug from your abandoned car will work just fine. 

The key is to use jumper cables in reverse and weld them to the terminals of the dead battery for about ten minutes. That's right: weld them. You're creating a short circuit: the positive and negative terminals are touching each other directly, so all the energy from both batteries is flowing through the cable and back into itself, illuminating the little lights on your welder and heating up the battery until it starts working again.

You'll need two sets of jumper cables (don't use ones that are too short), a welder that can make small welds on metal (some cheap ones won't), some way of clamping the two cables together while they're welding, and a second person to help hold that clamp in place while you stick your welder in between.

Follow the following steps:

Step 1: Remove the caps from your old car battery and remove its cells using a pair of pliers.

Step 2: Connect the positive terminal from your new car battery to one side of the cell in your old battery using a piece of wire from your welding kit. Connect the negative terminal to an empty cell in your old battery using more wire, making sure to keep them separate from each other.

Step 3: Weld together where you connected the wires in both batteries and let cool for a few minutes before attempting to use it again. If you can't get it started after this, try attaching an external charger instead of welding it and see if that works!

Does Battery Reconditioning Really Work?

How does Espsom Salt Revive a Car Battery?

The water in your car's battery acts as an electrolyte, which allows the battery to generate a charge through a chemical reaction between its positive and negative terminals. Because of this, the water inside can dry out, leaving it unable to hold a charge. If your battery has gone completely dry, you can't recharge it; you have to replace it with a new one. But if the water is just low enough that it's no longer doing its job, you can put some Epsom salt in the battery to rehydrate it.

An average 12-volt lead-acid car battery contains 2 gallons of water and weighs around 20 pounds. To restore the water level in this type of battery, you need 1/2 cup of Epsom salt. You don't have to measure exactly; just fill the battery container with the salt until it's at least half full. 

The salt will dissolve into the water, and after about 30 minutes, you'll be able to see whether or not you've added enough. If so, let the salt sit for another hour before topping off with more water to fill up the space around the plates—you should take care not to overfill or spill any excess on the plates themselves. If not, add another 1/2 cup of Epsom salt and check again in an hour. It can take up to 4 hours for a half-full battery to reach full charge, so make sure you plan your timing accordingly.
