Double A Lithium Batteries-Introduction, Comparison, And Cost

Jun 28, 2020   Pageview:591

Talk about batteries and in particular the AA batteries. Most of us use these batteries in most of our daily use appliances like when we are doing photo and video work. The lighting uses the AA batteries and the audio equipment like the lavalier mics or the zoom A6 recorder, which uses different microphones are powered by AA batteries. The speed lights or the flashguns that are the biggest and the most important things for photographers, they use four AA batteries. If you are doing a wedding shoot or an outdoor shoot in the night then these batteries will not last long. For this, you will need an external battery pack that holds another eight AA batteries which is enough for getting you going for the whole day.

AA batteries are common in almost all portable devices nowadays. The Ever Ready Company in the USA introduced these batteries in 1907. In 1947, the American National Standard Institute standardized their size but it was used in flashlights and electrical novelties before formal standardization.

Are Double-A Batteries Lithium?

AA batteries are lithium-ion batteries. This is a suitable and non-rechargeable solution or replacement for alkaline batteries. AA batteries are a suitable solution for alkaline batteries having more sustainability, capacity, and shelf life in a much smaller size. The AA batteries provide a longer service life than alkaline batteries used in toys, torches, wireless keyboards, cameras, and other consumer electronic devices.

The size of these batteries is almost the same as that of alkaline batteries with 14.5mm diameter and 50.5mm length. The output is 1.5V which is also identical and typically used in series-connected pairs of 3V devices. It is commonly used in many portable household devices and also known as a “Penlight” battery.

What Are The Best AA Lithium Batteries?

People often choose the cheap batteries that are awful when considering the service, but if you are using them for something like a mouse or any other low power or low voltage equipment then they may perform fine for them. However, for high power equipment like the flashguns and video equipment you need something on which you can rely on so that you will not face failure halfway during your work.

For finding out the best battery, let us test some different batteries using a flashgun to see the difference between different sets of batteries. Now if we use Duracell if rechargeable ones are not available. Using the Duracell ultra-power, keeping in mind that the Duracell plus power is also good but the ultra-power lasts a little bit longer that is the reason they are called number one lasting batteries for Duracell. Therefore, we will be testing these against the energizer Eco advanced for which they say have 80% long-lasting power. The third one is the Wilkinson batteries that are the cheapest and the most durable as well. You get twelve Wilkinson batteries for the same price of six Energizer or Duracell batteries.

The test will be as if we will put all the batteries one by one in the flashgun and it will be set on full manual power and we shall see for how many shots each of the batteries last. We will start the test with Wilkinson that is the cheapest of them all.

WILKINSON BATTERIES:?We will put Wilkinson batteries in the flashgun that uses four batteries at once. We put the flashlight on manual power. We got twenty shots but the working was very much slow, we had to wait for 34-seconds after every shot for the screen on the flashgun to come back on. Therefore, if it takes 30+ seconds to recycle for every shot then they are useless for the photographer, as it is taking too long. As they are the lightest in weight, it can be assumed that they do not have that much power in them and maybe suitable for small equipment like a mouse or small toys.

ENERGIZER ECOADVANCED:?We will put energizer batteries inside the flashgun and put it on manual power. Therefore, we got 229 shots out of these energizer eco advanced batteries with 6 seconds recycle time before they started to take more than 30 seconds for recycling. Considering the 20 shots by Wilkinson batteries, it can be said that these are pretty much better in performance on a full charge. If you are not using the full power every time, like in ETTL mode then the number of flashes may increase from 229 to maybe 300 or even 400 shots. A little piece of advice is that when you take these batteries out of a high power unit then do not throw them out, use them in any low power unit they can perform in there for a little time till their full power drains.

DURACELL ULTRA-POWER BATTERIES:?Last, one is the Duracell ultra-power batteries; we will put them inside the flashgun and put it on manual power. We got five seconds to recycle time. That is the best among these three batteries and we got the same 229 shots before they started to go above 30 seconds for recycling.

How Much Are AA Lithium Batteries?

AA lithium batteries cost according to the brands that produce them. The ones with low power cost a little lower than the ones with high power. All are AA lithium cells the price variation is due to the power and the quality. If we take the three variants Duracell, Energizer, and Wilkinson that we tested earlier and see the price difference between them, we will arrange them according to power lower to higher.

1.Duracell Ultra Power costs 5 pounds for 4 battery cells.

2.Energizer costs 5 pounds for 4 battery cells.

3.Wilkinson costs 1 pound for 12 battery cells.

4.Duracell Ultimate costs 6 pounds for 4 battery cells.

The Duracell ultimate batteries are about the same size as the Wilkinson batteries but are more reliable. They can give you 436 shots before they go over 30 seconds recycle time. Therefore, they may be the best choice for you considering the lightweight and the price.
