Can I Use A 5Ah Battery Instead Of 4Ah-Difference, Comparison, And Effect

Sep 14, 2020   Pageview:6063

Are you confused about whether you can use 5Ah instead of 4Ah battery? If so, don't get confused; just read on to know everything about 4Ah Vs. 5Ah batteries.

When it comes to making a differentiation among a 4Ah and 5 Ah battery, one of the most important things to determine battery longevity.  Although both batteries have almost the same specifications, they don't function exactly as you would imagine. As for other stuff, the equations going into the construction of batteries are more complicated than the average user needs to know.  Luckily, here is a short and simple guide to help you understand what exactly is Ah, how to find the right Ah, the difference between 4Ah and 5Ah battery, and much more.

Ah, is the notation used to tell the user how much amperage the battery will supply for exactly one hour. In small batteries, like personal vaporizers or regular AA batteries, the Ah rating is typically given in milli-amp hours (mAh). In the case of large batteries, the rating is shortened as Ah. Most deep-cycle batteries can give you an Ah rating at multiple C ratings. The C level tells you how many Ah the battery will provide for a very particular period.

Firstly you should be aware of where to look for Ah on your battery before you can look at the difference between 5Ah and 4Ah batteries. You can find the Ah rating on the battery pack. If you can't find an Ah rating on it, it's possible because you look at a starting battery that is not built to run in Ah rating. Make sure you're looking at the correct battery type.

Now, let’s get started with a quick post to 5Ah Vs 4Ah battery.

What is the difference between 5Ah and 4Ah battery?

Capacity is the key difference between the 5Ah and 4Ah batteries. Technically the 5Ah battery draws more current for 1 hour or more time for the lower current. Other variations may be weight and height. The key factor in battery charging power is the volume/ weight of the chemical components that hold the charge.

Both 4Ah and 5Ah batteries contain F1 and F2 terminals. The F1 is referred to as the T1 terminal and F2 as the T2 terminal. The terminals are identical, but only vary by size i.e., F1 is 0.187 inches (3/16") wide and F2 is 0.250 inches (1/4")wide. Fortunately, if you are new, always check both terminals before using a battery as they might explode if wrongly connected.

Can I use a 5Ah battery instead of 4Ah?

These two batteries have the same dimension and have the same voltage. The only difference is confirmed by the small weight disparity in the power of the amp-hour. Now, most people are confused that they can use the 5Ah battery instead of 4Ah. So scroll down to know whether you can use the 5Ah battery instead of 4Ah.

Yes, it can be used and how the exchange would look like. If you are using a 4Ah battery and heading towards the 5Ah would mean that your application could run up to 25% longer. In contrast, if you want to change from 5Ah to 4Ah, this means your electric device will run up to 20-23%.

So you have to ask yourself, is this disparity in run time actually going to impact the final result of how you use the battery? There are also cases where it would have no impact because the battery is merely there as a secondary power source. Still, if it runs as the main power source, it may experience a hiccup. If the electricity really goes out, 4Ah or 5Ah could mean a few minutes' difference, which is very negligible. In an environment where the power is continuously running down over 7 or 8 hours and having to stretch it for another hour or two, it is important to update.

There are so many devices for this 5Ah and 4Ah batteries. It won't be easy to mention and provide a suggestion for a particular device. The best we can do is illustrate some of the products that include home security alarms, UPS backup systems, home medical equipment, and two-wheeled electric scooters.

Do battery amp hours affect power?

Yeah, Amp Hours Affect Power, but why? It explains that if the two battery packs produce the same volts, they're not supposed to affect the capacity but just the runtime. A closer look at the feature of the battery pack gives us some insights. Power is measured in watts and can be determined by multiplying volts and amps.

The voltage for both 5Ah and 4Ah remains constant. Here the number of cells comes into play i.e., the amps(current).  Let's assume that the Makita XFD07 requires 240 watts of power to drill. At 12V, each battery needs to deliver 20 amps of current to make it happen (12V x 20A = 240W).

Each cell in the series must contribute maximum current since it is not an additive between series connections. There are two sets of cells in the 5Ah battery, and the parallel relation between them makes the current additive. So every set just asks its cells to give 10 amps each.

It's a lot easier to keep the power level up with 10 cells, each working half as hard. The tougher the job, the harder it is for 5 cells to sustain the same amount of power as 10 cells.

The Final Verdict

Now you got to what exactly is Ah rating in a battery. There is a minute difference between 4Ah and 5Ah battery. Hopefully, you have learned all the differences and similarities, and you can certainly use 5Ah instead of a 4Ah battery.
