Waverunner Batteries: Kind,Cycle Life, and Changing

Jan 16, 2021   Pageview:892

Batteries can be used not only by household appliances but also transportations. One of those transportations is waverunner, or jet ski. If you have a jet ski and is in need for another battery, then you have come to the right place! Here, we will talk about the kind of battery you need for waverunner and everything about the battery. From the kind of the battery, its cycle life, and the steps to change the waverunner battery.

What kind of battery does a jet ski take?

Jet ski batteries are usually a 12-volt battery. Of course, this means that you should charge the battery at 12-volt too. Seeing the nature of the battery, it means the battery can only be fully charged after several hours. When you charge, make sure the amp is not beyond 2.

If you need a list on jet ski batteries you can use, here are some of them:

1. Deka Power Sports ETX16L

Deka’s power main highlight is its sealed feature. With it, there is no need to worry about any leakage whatsoever, since the battery is fully sealed by its compartment. It is also maintenance-free. The ETX16L version is most suitable for 2-stroke jet skis engines.

2. Rechargeable YTX20L-BS

Rechargeable YTX20L-BS has a unique acid inside it that allows the battery to have low maintenance properties and the lack of spillage. Its properties also prevent corrosion.

3. Chrome Battery YTX-30L

Chrome battery has a unique technology, which is the AGM technology. This technology resulted in a safer, more resilient, and durable battery compared to others.

4. Odyssey PC625 Powersports Battery

The battery with a 2-year warranty is shock-proof. It has longer battery life compared to most batteries that has deep-cycle properties.

5. Deka Power Sports ETX20L

This version has similar properties with the previous deka, except that it is not specific for 2-stroke jet ski engines only.

How long does a waverunner battery last?

A good jet ski battery can last from three to five years. That is, assuming that the battery is given proper and well maintenance. If you want to make sure that your battery last long enough (or maybe even longer), here are some tips you can do:

1. Charge it properly.

You need to make sure that your battery is being charged properly. As a matter of fact, there should be some energy within the battery even when you are not using it. If you do not charge it despite its lack of energy, the battery wouldn’t even last a year. It will last only one riding session at least. Hence, it is important for you to charge the battery properly and regularly no matter what the condition is.

2. Do not plug when it’s full.

Once the battery is full, you will have to unplug it. Although you can plug it, make sure the time of the plugging is too long. Overcharging can result in overheating, and you know what they say about overheating and batteries never get along. It will eventually damage the battery, and it will affect the lifespan of the battery too. So make sure that you check on your jet ski battery every few hours during charging!

3. Use solar panel.

Using a solar panel is probably one of the best solutions for charging waverunner batteries. After all, a solar panel will automatically charge the battery when it is exposed to light. It is also “automatic,” meaning that it will charge the battery automatically when the battery is not full. When the battery is full, the charging will also stop. Pretty convenient for those who are busy, isn’t it?

4. Stay away from cold temperature.

Overheating is not the only temperature you should avoid. The jet ski battery shouldn’t be in an extremely cold place too, or else it will damage the quality of the battery. It’s best to place the jet ski and the battery outside, where there will be enough sunshine for the battery (hence solar panels are also best for the charging process).

How do you change the waverunner battery?

Changing the waverunner battery is not as complex as it sounds. However, you will need appropriate equipment for a safe and proper process. Here are the steps to do them:

1.Get the best replacement battery. Make sure it matches with the previous battery or can be used for your jet ski.

2.Wear protective gear such as glasses and latex gloves to protect yourself.

3.Prepare a solution consisting of 50-50 battery acid and water that can help neutralize the corrosion of the battery acid in case there is any on the battery.

4.Open the compartment used to host the battery.

5.Disconnect the earth connector (the black connector that has a negative sign).

6.Remove the clamp and the red connector (this is for the plus sign).

7.Remove the old battery.

8.Clean up the equipment with the solution. Yes, this means cleaning the clamps, connectors, anything that should be cleaned. Get new wires in case the old wires are damaged. Basically, replace everything that’s broken and clean the equipment that has dirt on corrosion. It’s best to clean the equipment slowly with a brush, so you won’t damage them.

9.Attach the clamp with the red wire (plus sign).

10.Attach the clamp with black wire (negative sign).

11.Place the new battery to where it’s supposed to be.

12.Perform deep-cycle charge to assure that the battery will perform in full energy.

13.Once the charging is complete, discharge the battery and close the compartment. And you’re done!

Jet ski batteries are pretty much the same like any other batteries. What makes them different is that they’re programmed to maximize themselves for jet ski or waverunner. Except that, the maintenance is pretty much the same with regular transportation batteries: keep them out of extreme temperature, regular charging, regular cleaning, and many more. If you can maintain them properly, I assure you they will last for a long period of time, even longer than how they are supposed to be.
