Refurbishing Car Battery-Introduction, Method And Cycle Life

Nov 27, 2020   Pageview:512

Battery refurbishing means bringing back the healthy life and enhancing standard electrolyte level and full charging capacity. Car battery discharges lead sulphate crystals, formed around its plates. This massive buildup affects the discharging and charging capacity of the battery. Batteries that can be refurbished include gel batteries, lithium-ion batteries and lead-acid batteries.

Are refurbished car batteries good?

Refurbished car batteries are considered good in generating power in cars due to various reasons, as discussed below.

Affordability

A refurbished car battery is much cheaper than new batteries. They just need less amount for repair hence enable savings. Repairing lead-acid batteries does not require much capital besides buying a few quite affordable materials, tools and equipment.

Availability

Finding a new battery can be hard, especially for older models. However, many battery suppliers will have refurbished batteries for older models that will still provide the needed power. This enables the emergency issue to be avoided. It is recommended to purchase from a reputable dealer. One should choose a battery with a warrant and one that performs an auto electrical test on every charged battery.

Reliable Power

Regularly maintained refurbished batteries could be equally reliable as a brand-new car battery.

Longevity

A well maintained, used and cared for, enables a refurbished car battery to last longer. However, it does not require frequent recharging. It lasts longer once it is passed through the right tests and professionally recharged.

Eco Friendly

Batteries are dangerous and highly toxic. When old batteries are disposed of to the environment, they adversely cause biodiversity effects. Refurbishing batteries help enhance a sustainable environment for the future generation. Vehicles that use refurbished batteries saves a lot of gas emission hence reducing the environmental pollution. It is environmentally friendly.

How do you refurbish a car battery?

Prepare The Battery

Clean off the battery's terminal. It is encouraged to put on gloves before cleaning due to corrosion existing on posts. Distilled water is mixed with baking soda till it forms a runny paste. The runny paste is later applied on the posts and cleaned by use of steel wool. If there is corrosion that is difficult to clean, using a toothbrush may help. Once the mixture starts working, foam is produced, which is washed down with little water and baking soda. Wipe it out and let it dry completely.

Check Battery Voltage

Check the battery by use of a voltmeter. Connect the voltmeter on the terminals. The battery might have suffered a short circuit if the voltmeter reads 0 and might require replacement. If it reads less than 12.6V, then refurbishing might be essential for the car battery.

Empty The Battery

Give a small nudge to the screwdriver to access gently under the battery caps. Ensure the battery is tilted away from you as you pour the acid into the bucket. Once the battery cells are emptied, stand it back as normal. Neutralize the old acid by adding baking soda into the bucket. In this step, it is essential to use chemical-resistant goggles to avoid burns from the battery's acid.

Clean The Cells

Mix half a pound of baking soda and half a gallon of distilled water. Use a plastic funnel to pour the formed mixture into each cell and later shake it to clean out the inside. Later, open the caps and pour the cleaning fluid into a bucket for proper disposal as a waste liquid.

Battery Refurbishing

Epsom salts and distilled water are mixed to create electrolytes. The mixture is achieved by adding Epsom salts in boiled distilled water while stirring it. Once the mixture is clear, it is poured into each cell by use of a clean funnel until they are 100% fully filled. The caps are placed back on the battery, and it is shaken for some time. The electrolyte is important in increasing the car's amperage and raising its voltage. However, it is also essential to stop the sulphating plate as it will kill the battery.

Charge The Refurbished Battery

Caps are taken off to prevent overflow and heating up of electrolyte solution. The positive lead is connected to the positive battery terminus, and the negative lead is connected to the negative battery terminus. The battery is left to charge for almost a day and a half. The battery charger should be placed away from the charger.

Test The Battery

The test is done using the voltmeter on the battery. 12.43V and above readings mean the battery is ready to be tested. If the battery is below 12.43V, it should be placed back on charging for the next 12 hours. In case of any overflowed electrolytes, refilling should be done. Place caps back on the battery with normal readings and connects them to the car. Allow it to run under load for a few minutes. Later, check the readings again. If the results are below 9.6V, then the refurbishing process has to be redone since the battery is not fully refurbished.

How long does a refurbished car battery last?

Refurbished batteries normally last for about five years. There are important factors that determine the life expectancy of a battery as discussed below;

Battery Size

Small batteries contain fewer cranking amps. Cranking amps are responsible for measuring the total instant power a battery can put out. Small batteries contain insufficient reserve capacity leading to batteries' shorter life span.

Corrosion

Electric shocks occur when there is moisture in the engine bay, which causes corrosion forming on battery terminals. This results in shorts and added resistance, which quickly drains the car battery.

Abnormal Cold Weather

Cold temperatures affect the strength of the car battery. Colder temperatures slow down the chemical reaction which is needed in car batteries for power production, which in turn damages the battery.

Cold Starts And Short Trips

More power is needed to start the car when the engine is cold. Short trips on a cold start cause more harm to the battery. They do not allow the battery to be recharged since the engine was not able to warm up. However, this may result in the car's battery damage leading to its failure.

Final Thought

Refurbished car batteries are a great choice in powering car engines. They are readily available, affordable and eco-friendly. Nonetheless, proper maintenance of the battery increases its life cycle. With proper use of refurbished batteries, they can be useful just like new batteries.
