How to Restore Dead Batteries – Introduction and Recharging

Jun 08, 2021   Pageview:846

When it comes to dead batteries, most people often opt to store them in their garages or take them to recycling centers. They appear useless, and they cannot do the job they are intended for like before.

However, replacing some batteries can be quite expensive; thus, we must use the available ones to the fullest. A battery will reach the end of its lifespan after a couple of years of effective use. Therefore, it is essential to know when the battery is about to die and what to do after it is dead.

Therefore, I have some great news for you. There are some procedures that you can perform on your dead battery and revive it. However, they require patience and following instructions keenly. The good thing is that most of these processes do not require any money and you can do them at home.

I know you are asking yourself, how can it be possible to revive a dead battery? I will show you in a few minutes, but first, we need to know if it is possible and what is needed. Also, we need to know the types of batteries that we can easily revive.

How to Restore Dead Car Batteries

Car batteries are the essential parts of any car, and they are expensive parts. Therefore, replacing them after some time can be quite embarrassing and a great threat to your wallet. Therefore, it is vital to know if it is possible to revive a dead car battery.

Over the internet, many people search for ways that can be used to revive a dead battery. This means that everyone is eager to keep his/her dead battery for some time before replacing it. The naked truth is that you will need to replace that battery after a certain period, but it is not yet time to throw it into a recycling pin.

Cars are the most used modes of transport globally, and a dead battery can be so frustrating. Therefore, having some knowledge of the car battery will help you avoid some frustrating emergency breakdowns. To revive your dead car battery, follow these steps:

You need safety items such as safety rubber hand gloves, apron and safety goggles. You also need to have the following ingredients: Epsom salt, baking soda, battery charger, voltmeter, and cleaning tools.

First, you need to remove your battery from the battery compartment and clean it. Clean the battery surface and the battery terminals that are prone to rust and corrosion. Clean the battery with a solution of baking soda and distilled water. Use a brush to clean the rust away from the terminals and a piece of cloth to wipe the surfaces.

Check the voltage status of the battery with a voltmeter. Connect the voltmeter with the terminals of a battery and be keen on the readings. If the voltmeter indicates anything below 12.6 volts, then the battery is dead, and it needs to be revived.

Open the battery caps and empty the entire electrolyte into a plastic container. Pour about half-pound of baking soda into the plastic container containing the old battery acid. This neutralizes the acid and makes it less harmful.

Clean the battery with a solution of baking soda and distilled water. You should pour this solution using a funnel. Ensure that each cell is full, then close the caps for at least five minutes. After five minutes, the battery cells will be clean; thus, you need to empty the solution into another empty plastic bucket.

Prepare another electrolyte by mixing half a pound of Epsom salt in boiling distilled water. Using a funnel, pour this solution into the battery once it is clear. Fill the cells to the required level and close the caps.

Using the recommended battery charger, recharge the battery for about a day. After the battery is fully charged, use a voltmeter to test the battery voltage. If the voltage is over 12.4 volts, you are good to go. However, if the voltage is below 12.4 volts, continue charging the battery until it attains the needed voltage.

How do you bring a dead battery back to life?

To bring a dead battery back to life, you need to know the type of battery that you have. Not all batteries can be reconditioned. The batteries that can be revived are lead-acid batteries, lithium-ion batteries, NiCad batteries and Ni-MH rechargeable batteries.

The steps that you need to follow are:

You need to have a syringe, a voltmeter, battery charger and distilled water. You also need to have safety goggles, chemical gloves and an apron.

Before starting the process, clean the battery thoroughly with a solution of baking soda and distilled water. Ensure that you clean the rust and corrosion on the battery terminals.

Open all the battery caps with a screwdriver or pliers for the protruding caps. Measure the battery's voltage with a voltmeter before doing anything.

Fill the battery with distilled water until it reaches the required level. Use a syringe to fill the battery cells and ensure that all the cells are filled. The distilled water will activate acid on the battery plates.

Measure the battery’s voltage after filling it with distilled water. You will find that the voltage has increased.

Mix the distilled water and the acid by shaking the battery a bit. However, the contents will mix after you have charged the battery with 12 volts direct current. You can use a 12V charger but nothing below 9V. Wait for five minutes, and you will notice some bubbles.

Pull excess water from the cells using a syringe and start charging the battery. Do not cover the holes until the battery attains some charge.

Can a completely dead battery be recharged?

You will hear someone saying that his/her car is dead. However, this normally means that the battery is completely discharged; thus, the voltage available cannot support the car's functions. Therefore, if your battery cannot start the car, it is important to check the voltage level of the battery.

If the battery voltage is below the required amount, it means that the alternator might be faulty or the battery is dead. Therefore, it is good to charge a dead battery because it can make it work properly again. Thus, a completely dead battery can be recharged to access its condition.
