Is the Battery AC or DC-Introduction and Why

Batteries are a vital source of energy. In fact, the use of batteries is immense. It provides a backup power outage. 

The usage of batteries in the 21st century is diverse. Everywhere you go, you will find a battery. In fact, your own mobile phone in your pocket runs through a battery. Moreover, at home, the batteries are wired to electrical appliances.

There are different types of batteries, like one used to balance the energy rates, so if the power goes down, the appliances connected still receive power. On the other hand, some batteries are used for storing energy. This energy typically comes from solar and wind and discharges that energy from batteries when needed. 

The question is, what type of power is needed for the battery? Is it AC (alternate current) or DC (Direct Current)?

What is alternating current and direct current described? Of course, it describes the types of current flow in a circuit. But what about a battery that is AC or DC powered? Before going into that, let's understand what AC and DC are. 

Direct Current (DC):

A direct current is an electric charge or current that only flows from source to destination in one direction. 

DC current does not go out regularly. The current in DC power goes in a single direction. The major use of DC is as the power source for electrical devices and, more importantly, to charge batteries. 

Alternating Current (AC):

On the other hand, alternating current (AC) changes direction periodically. 

AC is the most commonly used and preferred for home appliances, equipment, offices etc. 

In the case of batteries:

In the case of batteries, direct current is used in the batteries. Almost every battery that we use in our daily life uses the power of DC. Typically, a common DC voltage is 5V (for small batteries) or 12V.

A battery works more simply. A battery doesn't store the energy directly. First, the source provides the energy or direct energy, then it converts the electrical energy into chemical energy, and afterwards, it stores it. In the same way, when the battery is being used, the same chemical energy is converted to electrical energy. 

The same electrical energy is a direct current, not an alternating current because the battery current does not move periodically; it moves in one direction. So to be clear, batteries only use direct current (DC).

Is a car battery an ac or dc power source?

The car battery enables everything in the car to work properly. In fact, nowadays, electric cars are fully loaded with batteries, and that car runs through a battery. 

The car batteries supply power to every car component, like light music, speedometer etc.

How does a car battery work?

Let's say you connect an AC supply to a battery in a car. Then the generator in the car will only charge half the positive cycle. Then the battery will discharge through the negative half cycle. So it's impossible to take advantage of it. So it is the DC that is used in a car battery.

Why are batteries DC and not AC?

The question is, why are batteries DC and not AC? This is the question that most people ask. Although batteries use direct current rather than alternating current, they provide both current and power.

A simple battery comprises two terminals. The battery simply converts the chemical energy into electrical energy while in use. The charge stored through the sauce on the plates of the batteries is static. So alternatively, the power stored in the battery is static in nature, and that's direct current.

Why isn't the power source for a battery AC? 

First, the sauce that charges the battery is Direct Current (DC). Okay, so let's say why AC can't charge a battery. 

Now, if we connect the positive terminal of the AC source to the battery's positive terminal and the negative terminal of the AC to the battery's negative terminal, the source of alternating current is started, and the current starts to flow. But it is not charging the battery. 

As we described earlier, an alternating current does not go in one direction; it goes in periodically. So in the first half, the current goes from the AC source into the battery in one direction, but afterwards, it goes in the opposite direction in the second half. 

So in the first half, it charges the batter half, although it discharges the battery in the second half by moving in the opposite direction. And the same process goes on. 

Finally, the battery doesn't charge at all. In fact, it causes a waste of energy as well. Moreover, if the alternating current (AC) continuously supplies the current, it may break the battery. 

So, which current is better, alternating current or direct current?

There are diverse uses for both AC and DC. In fact, both of them are widely used in our daily life. 

In the case of AC, it is quite effective for power transmission. It enables a steady electric power supply and makes sure there will be good lighting. Moreover, AC is more affordable than DC. 

Moreover, you will need a lot of converters for both AC and DC. Especially in the case of charging batteries and then using those batteries for AC-sourced appliances. Moreover, AC power transmission cannot pass the current over longer distances. In this case, DC power comes in very handy.

So, to sum up, the battery uses DC power instead of AC power. So don't get confused with it. Even if you charge any type of battery with an AC power source, it can cause damage to the battery. So always keep that in mind.
