How batteries work

Freezing temperatures may increase the reaction rate too. As stated above, an optimum temperature is expected for the battery to work properly. It will stain a lot to generate the desired minimal heat before it starts working well.

You may store batteries in a freezer, as many people do so today. However, you should never insert them directly in the device while they are still cold, especially to charge. Warm it up a bit first, and then start charging.
