How to Recharge Dead Lithium-ion Battery-Recharging and Buying

Mar 16, 2020   Pageview:1019

The life of a lithium-ion battery can be defined as the number of charge-discharge cycles it goes through to reach a failure threshold. If we talk about it in the jargons used by the manufacturers then they term it as cycle life.

Due to various factors, this cycle gets affected. These include discharge current, temperature, charge current, state of charge ranges and more.

If we talk about the scenario where we have stored the battery then battery degradation is an unavoidable scenario. It is mainly affected due to the battery state of charge and temperature. In a worst-case scenario, the battery will experience a sharp drop in its capacity that would lead to gas generation.

Lithium-ion batteries are rechargeable that’s the reason they have gained so much popularity. We have already discussed the battery life of the lithium-ion battery and now we will head to the details of recharging and buying of these batteries.

Can a dead lithium battery be recharged?

The answer is both a yes and no. It depends on the reason behind the battery going dead.

3.2V 20Ah Low Temperature Square LiFePO4 Battery Cell

Whether the battery is badly damaged due to exposure to high temperature or you have been using it for a long time.

If you are trying to revive a dead battery that is exposed to high temperature for really long then while recharging, the battery may even blast. So before proceeding towards recharging the battery make sure you go through the complete details related to the lithium battery.

We will be discussing a few steps that will help you revive the dead lithium-ion battery.

How do you charge a dead lithium-ion battery?

There is no doubt in it that the lithium-ion batteries stand out in terms of higher capacity, the higher number of charge cycles, and lower self-discharge.

Still, if the lithium-ion battery goes dead and you want to recharge it then we have shared a few steps that you can follow to revive them.

1. Firstly, unplug the appliance from the power source and then remove the battery. The first thing you must do is to check the battery’s current voltage. You can use a voltmeter to check the reading. If it is below 1.5 V then your battery is definitely in sleep mode.

2. It’s time to check the charger whether it has the capability to recharge the dead battery or not. Some battery chargers offer recovery or boost features so make use of it.

3. After some time check the battery voltage again with the help of a voltmeter. You can even refer to the manual that comes along with the appliance for accurately following the procedure of recharging the battery.

4. If the voltmeter reads above 1.5 V then you are on the right path. It’s time to fully charge the battery. It may take a few hours for the battery to get fully charged. Make sure you do not overcharge the battery in a hurry. After that, it’s time to discharge the battery again by using it. For fast results, you can insert it in an appliance that puts a lot of load on the battery.

5. Now, freeze the battery. Yes, you read it right we are going to freeze the lithium-ion battery. You must put it in an airtight bag and then keep it in a freezer for one day. After that, take it out of the freezer and let it reduce its temperature naturally.

6. You are done. Now, you can insert the lithium-ion battery and it works perfectly fine just like it did before reaching the dead state. In certain cases, its performance may degrade but it’s better than a dead battery that is of no use.

When do you need to buy a new lithium-ion battery?

The answer lies in the previous question. You must try to recharge a lithium-ion battery by following the steps mentioned above. Even after following those steps if the battery is not getting recharged you can consult an expert who has knowledge of the same. Although we have covered all the steps, for more detailed information, you can try consulting an expert too.

After that, if the lithium-ion battery is still dead it’s time to buy a new lithium-ion battery. You must invest in a good brand while purchasing something as essential as batteries. Buy good quality products that follow the required norms that need to be followed to ensure the user’s safety. It’s always essential to consider our safety before going for a cheap product that is about to risk your life and damage the product too.

Final Thoughts

We would like to conclude by saying that just because you can remove and insert the lithium-ion batteries on your own it doesn’t mean you can ill handle it. The electrolyte inside the battery is flammable so before experimenting anything make sure you are wearing protection glasses.

If the lithium-ion battery goes dead and it is small in size then you should definitely go for replacement as there is no point in risking your life behind saving a small amount of money. But yes, the replacement should be with lithium-ion batteries only. These batteries offer great advantages to us.

These are good for the users too as they won’t have to carry a mobile phone or any other appliance that is extremely heavy due to powerful battery usage. We are just trying to explain it to you that the battery is really beneficial but don’t open a box after months or years and expect the battery to work like a new one. These recharging techniques do work but for really old stuff it is always better to buy a new one.
