Li-ion Battery Rebuild –Methods and Services

APR 16, 2020   Pageview:6178

Li-ion batteries power a number of electronics and have even been used in hybrid and electric vehicles. Li-ion batteries for your devices can be pretty expensive to replace as compared to normal AA and AAA alkaline batteries. So, if the li-ion battery in your mobile phone has shown remarkable performance in previous days, there are a few ways you can try to rebuild it before spending your money to replace it.

Can You Rebuild a Li-ion Battery?

Lithium-ion battery is the most common type of rechargeable battery you will surely have laying around the house. Li-ion battery is a new kind of rechargeable battery, which is rapidly becoming a popular option for all electronic devices. This is due to the advantages offered by this rechargeable battery which make it better suited than NiMH and NiCad. In most of the cases, Lithium-ion battery is a better choice due to having lower self-discharge, high capacity, and no memory effect.

You even get a lot more charge cycles before a Li-ion battery will begin to show problems. Yes, you do pay for the benefits it provides you as Li-ion batteries are usually more expensive to buy than NiMH or NiCad batteries.

Yes, it is possible to rebuild or recondition Lithium-ion batteries but when rebuilding them extra care needs to be taken. Lithium-ion battery has electrolyte inside it which is flammable and the cell itself pressurized. So be aware with the dangers of Lithium-ion battery and when in doubt either stop or take safety precautions such as use eye protection glasses and learn what to do in case of fire explosion, whilst rebuilding the batteries. So let’s look how to rebuild Li-ion batteries.

How Do You Rejuvenate a Li-ion Battery?

Following the steps given below you can rejuvenate a Lithium-ion battery:

Step One

Take the reading of voltage of dead battery with multimeter. Li-ion battery has a so called sleep mode which is ‘on’ if you leave the battery dry way too much. So, if the battery has discharged inside the device you were powering through it and it was remain to discharge even more then this might stop it from taking a charge again.

So, you need to take another healthy battery that is rated at the equal voltage like the damaged one and put both in a parallel circuit. Then take the crocodile clips and connect batteries together with it. First connect the neutrals together, and then connect the positives. Do this with jumper or spare wires. You now have a working circuit.

Now, leave the batteries and monitor them for 10-15 minutes. Watch out for any signs of danger and make sure the batteries are not becoming too much hot. Now, again take a voltage reading of the damaged battery. You’ll see that the damaged Lithium-ion battery now has a greater voltage reading and will accept a charge.

Another method

Another method for doing the step one is to use a USB cable, take a USB cable that you don’t use because you need to cut down one end of it. Cut off the smaller end (that you plug into your device). Then plug the other end into your PC.

Now, take the other end and carefully touch the black wire to the negative terminal of the battery and the red wire on the positive. Wait at least a couple of minutes whilst keeping them in place for a short time.  Keep reading the voltage of the battery until a decent improvement in voltage can be seen.

Step Two

Take your Li-ion battery charger, plug the battery into it and let the battery be fully charged. This will take about 3 hours depending on the type of Lithium-ion battery you are rebuilding. Now, discharge the Lithium-ion battery again. If possible try to do this in a device that will put a heavy load on the battery such as an LED torch.

Step Three

Next you need to seal your Li-ion battery in an airtight bag such as a zip lock. After this, put the bag in the freezer for 24 hours. Keep in mind that there should be no moisture in the bag so that the battery won’t get wet. After 24 hours when you take the bag containing battery inside it out of the freezer, you need to thaw out the battery first before doing anything else. So leave it for 5-8 hours until it return back to room temperature.

After this, fully charge the battery with the Li-ion battery charger and you will see some decent improvement in its performance. It will now be able to be charged again and hopefully last longer between charge cycles.

Where Can You Find Li-ion Battery Rebuild Services?

If your battery takes a lot of time to get fully charged and you also need to charge it more frequently, it’s high time to service it. For devices with built-in Li-ion batteries, the batteries should be serviced by a professional and authorized service provider.

If your battery got dead or damaged many people don’t realize the money they can save by rebuilding their batteries. In fact, most people don’t even know that such a service exists. Also, putting any battery directly in the garbage can be dangerous for the environment and for the beings living in it. When there are manufacturers such as Apple, Power Tool Doctor, and many more who provide services of rebuilding, reconditioning, and repairing batteries so why waste money on buying new batteries and putting the environment in danger by throwing dead batteries into the trash. By servicing your Li-ion batteries through any service provider you can enjoy big savings of rebuilding over battery replacements.

Find a professional and authorized Li-ion battery rebuild service provider and give them your dead Li-ion battery to rebuild or repair, they’ll give a new life to your battery and you can then use it again in your device. Some service providers also provide battery rebuild guide so you can also rebuild it yourself.
