How To Charge Two 12 Volt Batteries In Series-Methods, Solar Charging And Effect

Jun 30, 2021   Pageview:2224

In order to charge two 12V batteries in series you are required to do a few things such as check Jumper cables. These cables are used to connect the batteries together and they are normally available in two colors which are usually red (used for positive) and black (used for negative). Check the battery Charger (12V). This device is used to  charge the batteries. Battery chargers regulate the current that flows into the batteries while charging. Check the Battery Charger Clip. They are responsible for connecting the batteries to the battery charger and to hold the connection strongly. It is the most important tool for charging batteries in series. Check Manuals of the Batteries. They are responsible for carrying the details of the batteries such as manufacturer, specification, usage and recommended charging voltage.

You should use safety glasses while charging the batteries for protecting your eyes from being damaged in the process of charging.

How do you charge two 12 volt batteries together?

If you want to charge your 12 volt batteries together first read the specifications of your batteries. Before you start charging your batteries make sure that your 12 volts batteries are actually 12 volts. These specifications are normally placed on the sides of the batteries. The information box normally displays the amperage and the voltage requirements of the batteries.

Now, arrange the two batteries in the same orientation. Place your both 12 volts batteries in such a way to be charged in the same direction. This is essential for charging your two 12 volts batteries in series. This is basically done for ease of connection. The batteries can be arranged side by side in a way that both the batteries face a similar orientation because it allows to establish an efficient and easy connection of cables.

You should identify the positive and negative terminals of the batteries. This helps to protect your batteries from damaging. If you connect the wrong terminals together it will not help your battery from being damaged.

After this, connect the batteries together. You should connect the two 12 volt batteries together with the help of battery cables to connect the negative post of battery P to the positive terminal post of Q. Now, connect the charger clip to the battery by clipping the negative charger clip to the negative terminal of battery Q and the positive charger clip to the positive terminal of battery P. Make sure that the charger clip is properly clipped to the terminals of the battery to avoid any inconvenience.

After connecting the charger to the batteries,to avoid any damage, you must make sure that the battery charger is placed at a large distance to keep the cables away from the batteries. If you place the charger away from the batteries it will be very helpful to reduce the chances of damage to any or all the batteries in case of any leakage of sulfuric acid. At neutral point before charging, the charger should be placed directly above or below the batteries. If the batteries are connected together in series, the voltage of the batteries is added while the current remains constant. So, if you connect two 12 volt batteries in series, the output of the two 12 volt batteries becomes 24 volts.

At this point, you can start charging your batteries. Now, you just have to connect your battery charger to an electrical switch. Also, make sure that the source used for connecting the battery charger to electricity is sealed with a three pronged cord. Do not use an adapter or extension cord as the type of current flowing through the battery charger is enormous and can easily explode the adapter and extension cord.

Now, leave the batteries till they are fully charged. You can stop charging the batteries once the producer's specified charging time has been reached. You can also check this by looking at the charge indicator on the battery charger which tells when the battery is fully charged.

Solar Charging Batteries in Parallel

If you connect solar batteries in parallel, the positive terminal of one battery is connected to the positive terminal of the other battery and vice versa. The positive wires are attached to the positive connector and the negative wires are attached to the negative connector in a combiner box. When multiple batteries are connected in parallel, it is known as a PV output circuit. Connecting solar batteries in parallel causes the current to increase, but the voltage remains constant. So, if you connect the same batteries in parallel, the voltage of the system would remain constant , but the current would increase.

Connecting the solar charging batteries in parallel allows you to have more solar batteries that produce energy without increasing the voltage limits of your inverter. Inverters have amperage limitations, but you can meet these limitations by connecting your solar batteries in parallel.

Is it better to charge series in parallel or series?

Parallel connection is suitable for many electrical applications because it allows the batteries to operate continuously even if one of the batteries is damaged. But not always it is the suitable option for all applications. If you want your battery’s inverter to operate, you are required to meet certain voltage requirements. A proper balance of voltage and amperage is acquired if you want your solar array to perform at its best. For this requirement, a solar installer will manufacture your solar array with a hybrid of both series and parallel connections.

Conclusion

The most important thing to consider is that connecting your batteries in series will increase the voltage and connecting in parallel will increase your amperage. Both the voltage and amperage are very essential to consider when the manufacturer is designing your system, especially for finding an inverter that will be suitable and work best for you. Mostly, a solar installer designs a system with a hybrid of both series and parallel connections. This is very beneficial for functioning at a higher voltage and amperage, without the chances of overpowering the inverter, so your solar batteries can work efficiently.
