Solar Panels and Deep Cycle Batteries

Sep 26, 2022   Pageview:497

Solar power is seen as an alternative energy source and with the depletion of fossil fuels that reliance on solar power has elevated. It is an affordable, green, and easy-to-maintain source of energy as compared to electricity or any other energy source.

Normally lead-acid batteries were used to store solar energy which is generally designed to offer a large amount of current for a shorter period. Whereas, owing to the added benefits more people are inclined towards the usage of deep cycle batteries these days. Deep cycle batteries are developed in a way that they give consistent power supply for a long time.

The major advantage of deep cycle batteries is that they can be used up to maximum capacity and then can be recharged without damaging the battery's health and affecting its lifespan. There are two major types of deep cycle batteries which include:

SLA or Sealed lead acid - with thicker partition, thicker lead oxide plates, and denser electrolyte as compared to general lead acid batteries.

Lithium deep cycle batteries are equipped with energy cells.

What size solar panel to charge 100ah battery?

It is a tricky question that can’t be answered with a straightforward answer. It is because the size of solar panels needed to charge 100ah battery depends upon a lot of factors including:

3.2V 20Ah Low Temperature Square LiFePO4 Battery Cell
3.2V 20A Low Temp LiFePO4 Battery Cell -40℃ 3C discharge capacity≥70% Charging temperature:-20~45℃ Discharging temperature: -40~+55℃ pass acupuncture test -40℃ maximum discharge rate:3C

The type of battery you are using (lead-acid or lithium)

The state of discharge of the battery

Solar charger type (MPPT or PWM)

Exposure to sunlight

The most important factor in establishing the size of required solar panels is the state of discharge of the battery. It refers to the point to which the battery has been used or the removed capacity from the battery known as DOD (depth of discharge). The depth of discharge depicts how much energy you require to fully recharge the battery again to SOC (state of charge) or 100% charged. Another important factor in this regard is exposure to sunlight.

Generally speaking, you will need three 100 watts solar panels to charge your 12 V fully discharged lead acid 100ah battery with at least 4 hours of peak sunlight. In these conditions, it will take one day to fully recharge your battery.

Whereas for a 50% discharged battery, in similar circumstances, you will need only 2 solar panels of 100 watts to recharge the battery to full capacity in one day.

As for deep-cycle batteries, 180 watts powered solar panels will be enough to recharge your 50% discharged 100ah battery with at least 4.2 hours of peak sunlight. Whereas for a fully discharged battery you will need 300 watts solar panels to recharge your 100ah batteries with at least 5 hours of peak sun exposure.

These estimations are discussed to give you an idea that which factors influence ascertaining the size of solar panels required to recharge your batteries. Always make sure to check on these factors while installing solar panels.

How many watts of solar panels to maintain an RV battery?

RV battery is an abbreviation of Recreational Vehicle battery. RV battery is a lead-acid battery that stores electricity or energy rather than making it.

To determine the solar panel required to maintain an RV battery you need to determine certain factors including:

Your energy usage or requirement per day- it can be estimated by calculating the total energy required by all devices and systems installed in your RV

Battery storage capacity- battery is made up of lead oxide and lead plates in an electrolyte substance. The battery will store a higher charge if the volume of electrolyte is higher along with the bigger size of lead plates.

Panel efficiency: install panels efficiently on the roof of the RV so that they can consume maximum sunlight

A general estimation shows that you can get 30ah power per day with a 100-watt solar panel. To power all the installed systems and devices in an RV efficiently you will need at least 2 solar panels of 100 watts power.

How to charge a deep cycle battery?

It is important to recharge the deep cycle battery efficiently to ensure enjoying its power and energy. To charge your deep cycle battery you need to take the following steps:

You will need a correct charger that is specially designed for deep-cycle batteries. Even if the charger is for deep cycle batteries you need to ensure that the charger is compatible with the type of deep cycle battery. For instance, for a lithium ionic deep cycle battery, the most suitable charger will be a lithium battery charger.

After selecting a suitable charger, you will have to make sure that the voltage of the charger coincides with the battery voltage. If you have a 12V battery then the charger should also be 12V for efficient charging.

Compatible voltage is not enough, you have to ensure that the amount of current mentioned in amps also matches your battery charge capacity. For instance, in 12V chargers you have the option of choosing various charge currents like 4A, 10A, etc. You have to ensure that the amount of amp you choose is not higher than the AH rating mentioned on your battery.

After selecting the appropriate charger with the correct voltage and amperes you need to check that the terminals of your battery are clean.

Afterward, you will connect the red cable with the red terminal and the black to the black terminal.

Then you can plug your charger in and turn it on.

You can set charging time (if you are using smart chargers then they will stop charging on their own) and then disconnect the charger once it is charged.

After disconnecting you will also have to unplug the cables. Unplug the black cable first and then the red one from the terminals.

Alternatively, if you want to charge your deep cycle battery from solar power then you have to:

Connect your battery with a charge controller that balances the power flow from solar panel to battery to save the battery from over-charging and any sort of damage.

Connect it to a power inverter to convert the DC power into AC power to run your electronic devices.

Connecting the battery with the inverter and charge controller is quite simple and straightforward.
