Carbon Foam Battery - Introduction, Working And Cycle Life

Nov 24, 2020   Pageview:716

Batteries come in different sizes and types. The chemicals used in making these batteries vary from one manufacturer to the other. The main thing that all the manufacturers aim for is the durability, reliability, and effectiveness of their batteries.

We have all bought batteries that we do not even know the chemicals used in making them. I recently bought a battery, which I later realized was a carbon foam battery. I had to earn more about this type of battery, and for that reason, I want you to know more about it.

Having a battery that you do not know much about it can be dangerous. Sometimes the chemicals used in making these batteries are dangerous or might explode if exposed to certain conditions. Therefore, we will look at this battery type in detail.

We also need batteries that can last for an extended period as well as serving the intended purpose. For that reason, I request you to go through this article and get more information about the carbon foam battery.

What is a carbon foam battery?

This a good starting point because we might not be conversant with these battery types. A carbon foam battery is a green battery that is lighter, cheaper, and durable. A company known as Firefly manufactures this battery.

Firefly Battery Company is known for a patented technology and innovation in the manufacture of batteries. The battery has a structure that redistributes the small separator reservoir of other batteries to the active foam battery plates' pores.

The discrete microcells of carbon foam batteries together make up a new electrolyte structure. This makes the foam battery to have high power, energy, and cycle life. The battery also has more excellent energy delivery and faster rechargeability relative to a lead-acid battery.

When you compare a lead-acid battery with a carbon foam battery, the difference is visible. The technology used in the making carbon foam battery increases the cycle life by a factor of about two to three times.

The main improvement made to this carbon foam battery is that it resists sulfation and corrosion while increasing the plates' surface area. This battery company knew that the lead in the previous batteries could be exchanged with a new type of grid material, carbon foam.

The depth of discharge in this battery is between 80 and 100 percent of rated capacity. This can happen without any sulfation or loss of capacity.

Carbon foam battery is available in different sizes that include:

  • Size G31 -12V, 116Ah, 13.6 inches x 6.7 inches x 9.4 inches

  • Size L16 – 4V, 450Ah, 10.5 inches x 6.9 inches x 17.2 inches

Rodd  Collins of Compass Marine for Practical Sailor did Independent (PSOC Partial State Of Discharge) testing of AGM batteries. He discovered that Carbon Foam Batteries is the only AGM battery that can regain full capacity after 30 PSOC (one month) of cycle testing.

How does Carbon Foam Battery work?

Carbon foam battery has a design that is a twist on an asymmetric capacitor, which is a new type of electrical storage, which is a half capacitor and a half battery. Capacitors are capable of storing electrical charge physically, making it more advantageous.

The main advantage of using capacitors is that they are lightweight and can be recharged and discharged rapidly. The good thing also with capacitors is that they generate very little heat thus cannot damage any device.

On the other hand, batteries store electrical energy chemically. The energy can be released over more extended periods at steady voltages. Batteries can store more energy than the capacitor, but batteries are heavy and can take a lot of time to charge.

The carbon foam batteries combine the use of capacitors and chemicals present in conventional batteries. The capacitors store energy in electrolyte ions that are physically attracted to the charged carbon anode. This design delivers double energy that is usually delivered by a capacitor.

The cathode of Carbon Foam Battery relies on nickel oxyhydroxide that is used in rechargeable nickel-cadmium or nickel-metal hydride batteries. Carbon foam has so many holes to fill. The carbon used has 72 percent porosity meaning its volume is a space creating a big room for the nickel oxyhydroxide.

The good thing with a carbon foam battery is that it can withstand vibrations, inconsistent charging, or even long periods without charging. The negative plate of this battery is lightweight, and it is resistant to sulfation.

The microcell materials used in this battery allows it to accept and disperse power faster because of its higher density. It can provide 80 percent of usable battery capacity (depth of discharge to 20percent) and offers about three to four times the standard AGM's battery life.

You can charge this battery, and it will return to 100 percent of its original capacity. This means that the battery does not lose its ability to hold charge easily. The working principle of carbon foam battery is what makes it suitable for boats.

With the boats, you cannot add many batteries because the space is limited; thus, the boaters opt to increase usable battery capacity with a faster ability to charge.

How long does a carbon foam battery last?

This section interests everyone because we all need durable products. Our budgets are tight; thus, we must get something that does not require replacement after a few months.

Carbon foam batteries are known for their ability to last for an extended period. They can last twice as long as conventional lead-acid batteries. Lead-acid batteries can last for at least five years. This means that carbon foam batteries can last for over ten years.

A period of over 0 years will make you forget that you are even using a battery. The good thing is that this battery can charge faster than the conventional batteries that we know. It is made from new technology, making it suitable for boats that require a constant supply of energy.

Conclusion

The review above has shed some light on everyone about this new technological battery. It is suitable for the current energy needs of the whole world. The good thing with this battery is that it can withstand all the vibrations that can be generated by the machines.

Therefore, you have known that it is the right product; thus, you can get yours today and enjoy long-lasting battery life.
