Batteries are extremely useful as they convert stored chemical energy into electrical energy. They are a vital part when it comes to operating your devices. Although most of the recent technologies (smartphones, tablets, etc.) have internal batteries, there are still gadgets that require traditional batteries. Having access to these batteries is also easier as all you have to do is visit your local convenience store.

The problem is, whenever you are at a store for a new battery pack, you will need to sift through different batteries. The batteries are always in different shapes and sizes, and each one is labeled with a different name. It can be confusing to someone who is not sure what they are looking for.

You may wonder, why there are many different types of batteries when they all do the same thing. In this guide, we discuss the different sizes of batteries and all you need to know about them. Let’s get started.

What are the different sizes of batteries?

It is important to know the format of a battery s it is crucial in the buying criteria. If you make a mistake while buying your battery, it will not fit in its housing and end up being unusable. Therefore, before purchasing any batteries, it is important to check the size of the code of the format when in a device.

The different battery sizes usually contribute to the overall effectiveness of a device. Generally, the larger a battery is the more capacity it has to store more energy. So, even though two batteries (big and small) may both have the same voltage capacity, the bigger battery stores more energy. Below are examples of the different battery sizes.

A Size Batteries

A size batteries are the most popular batteries that are used in various applications of small devices. Examples of these batteries include AA, AAA, and AAAA batteries.

C Batteries

These are heavy-duty batteries mainly used in automatic hand sanitizer dispensers, flashlights, toys, and portable radios. They are perfect for heavy-duty applications that require frequent use.

D Batteries

Used in a lot of commercial devices that require an extended period of power time. Examples include stereos, paper towel dispensers, etc.

9V Batteries

These rectangular batteries are mostly used in devices that require lots of power and high voltage like infrared thermometers.

CR123A

These batteries generate volts and deliver a huge amount of power.

23A Batteries

These small batteries are mostly used in devices that require infrequent but powerful energy bursts like specialized medical devices and garage door openers.

CR2032 Batteries

These compact size batteries offer 3 volts and are used in watches, calculators, and medical devices.

Specialty Batteries

These are heavy batteries used for heavy equipment that usually require huge amounts of energy. Examples include:

12 Volt batteries- it is mostly used in cars and industrial equipment.

22 Volt batteries-used mainly to power cordless tools as it delivers high power for an extended time.

44 Volts batteries- powers devices that are in constant use and consume power like cordless power washers.

Are there a size batteries?

Size batteries are batteries that mostly power small appliances and devices. There are three types of A-sized batteries. Let’s take a look at them and where they can mostly be used.

AA Batteries

These batteries are also known as double-A batteries. They are the most popular battery size that is used in a multitude of applications. For example, you can use these batteries in thermometers, clocks, cordless phones, etc. these batteries measure at 1.5V. AA batteries work well for devices that require high current draw but are constantly in use.

You can get these batteries in different types including Alkaline, Lithium, Lithium-ion, NiCad, and NiMH.

AAA Batteries

The triple-A batteries are the second most popular type of batteries and are smaller than AA batteries. They are mostly used in calculators, thermometers, TV remote control, bathroom scales, and small toys. These batteries also measure at 1.5V. They generate less energy due to their smaller size. Therefore, they are primarily used as small devices that do not require a lot of energy.

AAAA Batteries

The quadruple A batteries are thin, small but powerful. They are often used in hearing and remote controls, LED penlights, and laser pointers.

What is the standard battery size?

Standardization of battery sizes is important. Standardization ensures that batteries are manufactured according to industry specifications and requirements. You have to be able to buy replacements for your device and they fit and work fine just like the dead ones. The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) has a clear and valid international designation for all electrical and electronic-related technologies including batteries.  The IEC imposed standard size on batteries is referenced in letters (AA, C, D, etc.) for Anglo-Saxon countries. Other countries use the references letter and digits (AA, Lr20, and 6Lr61). The non-rechargeable batteries fall under the IEC standard 60086, while the rechargeable ones are standardized according to IEC 60095.

The standard small battery sizes come in a broad range of batteries. They are commonly found in small devices and home appliances. They come in various sizes, shapes, and chemistries. The most common standard small size battery include the following:

Button or coin cell batteries-

Cylindrical batteries- most AA and AAA batteries are cylindrical and have a nominal voltage of 1 Volt.

Lithium Non-Rechargeable 3V button or coin cell batteries

Cylindrical lithium batteries

Small rectangular batteries

All battery manufacturers and industries have a common point of a standardized format when making batteries. Whether the batteries are alkaline, NiCd, lead, lithium, or lithium-ion, there is a standardized format that should be followed when manufacturing them.

The IEC and ANSI recommend that alkaline batteries have 1.5 volts, lithium batteries 3.6 volts, and a standard accumulator of 1.2 volts. It applies to the following battery types (L) R01, (L) R03, (L) R6, (L) R14, and (L) R20. Industries are also required to manufacture 6 (L) F22 batteries that have different voltages when it comes to the different types of batteries, for instance, the lithium and alkaline batteries have to contain 9 volts.
