How Long Do 18650 Batteries Hold Charge?

Nov 18, 2019   Pageview:5933

One of the most advanced power holding units the market has to offer is a 18650 battery, but before you use it you need to better understand how these batteries work and how efficient they are in things like holding charge. In general, if you have it on standby and do not use it, a 18650 battery will hold its charge indefinitely. Given that charging takes four to five hours, this feature helps make the 18650 battery a viable option for people looking for technology for long-term power storage that would allow them to make the most of their batteries.

Nonetheless, one thing you need to keep in mind is the fact that over time these batteries tend to lose their power. Therefore, a few years after you first start using these batteries, you will find that the maximum charge that your battery can hold after regular use would last a shorter period of time than before. It's important to keep this in mind, but it's also important that you figure out how precisely these batteries lose their capacity to prevent the battery you're thinking about using from happening.

How Long Do 18650 Batteries Stay Charged?

18650 batteries can stay charged for many months, the good ones seem to hold full charge  whereas 6 months is about as long as  anybody have used it and have reviewed about it before using / cycling them . but they're still at full charge at 6 months. So, it means that 18650 batteries can stayed charged for long time and can hold charge. However, to make your 18650 batteries stay charged for a long time its better to use it in a correct way which is only possible to follow the steps that are written on the battery’s outlet and by having the proper information about the batteries so that you can charge them in a correct way and it can ultimately be used for a long time than expected.

Some people have also witnessed that 18650 batteries can stay charged for almost one year which is quite better than the other batteries but also you have to take care of the battery the most in order to increase the span time of charged batteries.

How Do You Store 18650 Batteries Long Term?

It has been seen that to use 18650 batteries for a long time you have to take care of it otherwise it will start degrade within a month that is why it is important to know that how can you store batteries for a long time.

To store 18650 batteries for a long period of time,  you have to follow the given points;

  • 18650 batteries can be stored at very low temperatures, as they are easily weakened by high temperatures. So, the thumb rule to store such batteries longer is that they must be kept at less than 60 ° C or at a range of  - 20 ~ + 50 ° C (- 4 ° F ~ + 122 ° F)  at all times or otherwise it starts to degrade and won’t be able to use it.

  • It is recommended to shop in a cold environment than a warm one as the average processing should never exceed + 60 ° C (140 ° F).

  • The total space time for 18650 until recharge for the most part is approximately one year.

  • If you intend to store 18650 on a long-term basis, a storage charge close to 50 % of the usable capacity ( ~3.7 V ) rather than 100 % ( 4.2V ) will avoid faster deterioration of the battery.

  • Before using the device again, it's necessary to let it cool down a little to prevent damage. Upon charging the battery, you should also let it cool down until using it for the same purpose.

  • Once the battery is fully charged, the power outlet must be removed to prevent overheating. This means that if you want it to retain its charge or store the battery for a long time, you cannot leave your battery to charge for hours on end.

  • Do not store 18650 batteries in or near objects creating a static electrical charge.

  • Its better to do not use the device when the battery is only two-third of it is remaining because at this time the battery starts to maintain the performance of the device but eventually it ends up at damaging it, also it is better to do not over heat your device as it damages the battery and it won’t last for a long time.

What Does High Drain 18650 battery Mean?

High drain 18650 batteries means that these batteries can last longer as compare to the other batteries and can effectively be used. High drain is basically a relative term that is used for 18650 batteries, the older 18650 batteries could only hold less charge comparatively high drain batteries as they were limited to discharge. High drain batteries which are also called high C batteries are able to discharge more current, without damaging the battery or tripping a protection circuit, than a typical battery which is a great innovation in the world of batteries.

The Panasonic NCR18650B is a good example of such a battery. With a strength of 3400mah, the peak draw is about 6.8 A. You've got cells like the 3500mah Sanyo NCR18650GA and LG MJ1 a few years later. Such cells have a 3C or about 10A peak draw. These were called high drawing cells or high drain batteries because you could draw higher current from these batteries. But then you've got cells like the LG HG2, Samsung 30 Q, and Sony VTC 6, 3000 mAh cells with a total 15A draw. And cells like the Song VTC 5, which still have higher drawing, of course. So what are you calling' high draw?' I think' high draw' at the end of the day seems to refer to cells which draw or drain higher than 2 C.
