2.Nominal Capacity

The nominal capacity of the 18650 battery is related to its endurance. The unit is mAh. The higher the capacity, the stronger the endurance is. For example, 2800mAh battery can keep discharging for 2 hours at 1.4A.

3.Continuous Discharge Current (CDR)

Continuous discharge capacity is expressed by C. Continuous discharge current = continuous discharge capacity C × capacity    

For example, the capacity of an 18650 battery is 2800mAh and the continuous discharge capacity is 0.5c. Then the continuous discharge current is 1.4a. If discharge over 1.4a for a long time, the battery life will be seriously affected and may lead to overheat, burning or even explosion.


The smaller the battery resistance, the less consumption, and the stronger the discharge capacity is. The resistance parameter will be generally written to battery introduction page. If you want to choose and buy a battery, do not buy a battery that has more than 100 m Ω.

Many 18650 batteries used in series must be of the same brand and model. Otherwise, batteries with high internal resistance but low capacity will have bad effect.


Temperature is a major factor affecting the life of 18650 lithium battery. The higher the temperature, the faster the battery aging speed, the higher the temperature, and the greater the damage inside the battery has.

6.Button Top vs Flat Top

There are flat top and button top 18650 lithium batteries. As the figure below, anode on the left with protruding top is button top battery, while anode on the right without protruding top is flat top battery.

In general, I recommend purchasing button top batteries, because they are compatible for a wide range of devices and applications. The anode and cathode of a flashlight tend to have springs, which can be retractable. But if you want to use flat top batteries in series, the anode of the flat top battery cannot touch the cathode of the other battery.


7.Protected vs Unprotected

Button top 18650 battery has protective board, while flat top 18650 battery does not have protective board.

The 18650 lithium battery with protective board is several mm higher than that without protective board, and the price is a little more expensive, but the safety is better and the versatility is stronger. The 18650 lithium battery with protective board can prevent over-discharging, which may cause over-heat, combustion, explosion and other dangers.
