Acid in Car Batteries – Introduction and Acid

Nov 27, 2021   Pageview:879

Knowledge is power, or so they say. This is especially true when it comes to the electric system of your car and the car battery. After all, this is your ride’s soul and heart. Being left stranded a dysfunctional or dead battery is the last thing you would want. The more you know about the battery of your car, the less likely you will ever get stuck. Our main aim today is to help you understand the kind of acid that is found in your car battery.

On average, a car battery will often last between 3 and 5 years, but exposure to extreme elements and driving habits can significantly shorten the overall life of any car battery.

Before we look into acid in car batteries, let us first of all give you a brief of how the battery works in your car.

?There is a chemical reaction that puts your car in action. Chemical energy is converted to into the electric energy by the battery. It is this electric energy that powers the car and also delivers voltage to the starter.

?The battery keeps the electric current ready. The car battery provides the energy necessary to start the car. Besides, it also stabilizes the voltage, or simply supplies the energy that keeps the engine running.

A car battery is able to provide huge power because of its components. Acid is one of the major components.

How about we also take a look at the chemistry of the battery used to power a car? First, car batteries must have different chemical bases that vary depending on the type of battery. For example, a Zinc-Carbon car battery would have ammonium chloride or zinc chloride as an electrolyte, magnesium dioxide as the cathode, and zinc as anode.

Lead-acid car batteries, on the other hand, carry metallic lead and lead dioxide as sulfuric acid (electrolyte) and an anode. The Lithium-Ion battery often uses various substances, with the best combination being that of lithium cobalt as the cathode and carbon as anode.

Acid present in Car Batteries

Battery acid could simply refers to any acid that is used in battery or chemical cell, but usually, this term is used to describe the acid present in a lead-acid battery. Example of such batteries are the ones found in motor vehicles.

Automotive or car battery acid is between 30 and 50 percent sulfuric acid in water. The acid usually has a mole fraction of between 29 and 32 percent sulfuric acid, a concentration of between 4.2 and 1.38 mol/L, and a density of between 1.25kg/L and 1.28 kg/L. Acid present in car battery has a PH of about 0.8.

In terms of construction and chemical reaction, a typical lead-acid car battery usually consists of 2 lead plates separated by a gel or liquid containing sulfuric acid in water. Another important point to note is that is rechargeable. Car batteries have charging and discharging chemical reactions.

During the discharging period, or when the battery is being used, electrons typically move to the positively-charged plate from the negatively-charged lead plate.

When the car battery is fully charged, the positive plate is lead oxide, the negative plate is lead, and the electrolyte is concentrated sulfuric acid. If the car battery is overcharged, oxygen gas and hydrogen gas are produced by electrolysis of water. The gasses produced are lost. There are some types of car batteries that allow water to be added in order to make up for the lost water.

When the car battery is discharged, there will be a reverse reaction, which forms lead sulfate on both of the two plates. Fully discharging the battery results in water separating the two identical lead sulfate plates. At this point, the car battery is considered to be completely dead and cannot recharge or recover again.

Acid Found in Car Batteries

The making of any car battery typically requires some parts made from chemicals and metal. These dictate the cost of the batteries. The car battery is sold with battery sealing, which is not only the source for conversion of chemical energy to electric energy, but also helps keep the battery safe. The casing is usually made in different layers using various raw materials. It can contain carbonized plastic layer, a polymer layer, or Polythene Terephthalate.

Talking of the acid found in car batteries, each battery contains at least 30% to a maximum of 50% of sulfuric acid dissolved in water with 29 percent of sulfuric acid. The sulfuric acid’s density in a car battery is 1.25kg per liter. It is also worth noting that the PH level is usually about 0.8.

When replacing the chemicals, proper protection should be used always because the car battery chemical is typically volatile and dangerous.

Acid used in Car Batteries

From what we have already stated above, sulfuric acid is the type of acid used in car batteries. The acid is colorless and odorless. It is also a syrupy liquid is synthesized in reactions which are highly exothermic. It is also soluble in water. The acid is also referred to as “king of acids”.

When a lead acid car battery is charged fully, the electrolyte is usually composed of a solution consisting of up to 40 percent sulfuric acid and 60 percent consisting of regular water.

It is important to mention that batteries are usually made with electrolytes that can be basic or acidic. The lead-based battery remains the lead-acid battery in the market. A typical lead-acid battery typically consists of varying concentrations of water acids. Generally, sulfuric acid is typically denser than water. For this reason, the acid formed at the plate during charging and discharging has to flow downward and eventually collect right at the very bottom of the battery.

Water and sulfuric acid mixture is used beforehand since the battery plates are typically made of lead, which basically has very loosely bound atoms. The atoms electrons are released from their orbits by sulfuric acid and water (the electrolyte). Now, you will see the current or electron flow when the circuit is made.
