The sulfuric acid inside the battery engages in a chemical reaction with the plates. Sulfuric acid reacts with the lead plates to give out a sulfate. When the battery is charged, the reverse reaction takes place. However, this chemical reaction is not possible with vinegar that is a weak acid.
I had a neighbor who decided to top up his battery with sulfuric acid. However, his battery's acid content was more than the recommended, and it corroded the plates. After the corrosion, the battery was indeed dead.

These are the main components that drive electrons' process transfer and storage of the electrons onto the lead plates within the battery when an electrical current is applied during charging.
During the discharging process, the lead plates will discharge the electrons and take in the electrolyte, as the electrons are lost. This means that the lead plates act like sponges. This is not a good example, but it is just for your understanding.
Therefore, if vinegar is added to the electrolyte or any other substance that can contaminate the electrolyte, the lead plates' ability to absorb the electrolyte is reduced. Vinegar contains about 5% acetic acid and extensive content of water.
The acetic acid inside the vinegar corrodes and damages the lead plates because acetic acid is very corrosive when it is exposed to metals. Corrosion of the lead plates leads to a decreased ability of the lead plates to absorb electrons during the charging process.
Charging the battery changes the process and pushes the electrolyte out of the lead plates and back into the battery casing. The electrons migrate onto the lead plates, but due to the damage of the lead plates by acetic acid, the process is weakened.
The damage increase over every charge and discharge process, and the battery finally dies. Therefore, to save the battery from such sudden death, dump out all the contaminated acid, and start fresh. However, you should be keen while doing this because sulfuric acid is dangerous to work with, even with protective gear.
After dumping out all the acid, clean the battery with Epsom salt if possible or leave it to dry if Epsom salt is not available. You should mix distilled water and acid in the correct ratio before pouring it into the battery.
Reconditioning of a car battery works but only if the correct chemicals are used. Lead-acid batteries form insoluble sulfates over time, and this will reduce the effectiveness of the battery. However, you can remove these insoluble sulfates and make the battery better again.
Rejuvenating the battery also replenishes the electrolyte solution and allows the battery to charge and discharge properly. However, not all batteries can be reconditioned because they have different chemicals, and they work differently.
Some of the batteries that can be reconditioned include AGM, Gel batteries, lead-acid batteries, lithium-ion batteries, NiCad, and NiMH rechargeable batteries. Therefore, do not try to recondition any battery without having background information on the battery.
