The protection methods of Lead-acid battery

The reasons of Lead-acid battery scrapping are divided into three categories: firstly, overcharge and over-discharge under shortage of water. For example, taxi works day and night, even when its battery lack of water. The generator recharges the battery in float mode, which makes the battery overheat, and polar plate bending scraps the battery. The battery will heat up when overcharge. What’s more, just like boiling, the boiling electrolyte crushes the polar plate, and then the lead powder will fall down. After a long time, more and more lead powder falls down and when it accelerates to be as high as the lead plate, there will be short circuit on polar plate, and the battery scraps.

The solution in traditional lead-acid battery with sulfuric acid solution will wash out the polar plate during driving, which is easy to make the lead power on the polar plate fall down. This kind of scrapped battery cannot be repaired. Over 90% of the scraped batteries on taxi cannot be repaired. Secondly, fake & inferior batteries, refurbished batteries and substandard batteries cannot be repaired, either. The polar plate and solution of these batteries have poor quality. They can only discharge normally for a short time at the beginning. Thirdly, fully sealed lead-acid battery has separator sucking up with electrolyte like wool felt between two polar plates. This kind of polar plate won’t fall off for lashing. The reason of scrapping is irreversible vulcanization on polar plate. The white lead sulfate produced on the polar plate makes the effective area of polar plate smaller and smaller. So does the capacity of the battery. It means that an electric bicycle can run40 kilometers for the first time charging, but 20 kilometers later, and then lees than 1 kilometer. Finally, it can only scrap.

There are many factors affect lead-acid battery produce lead sulfide crystalline. One of the most common reasons is in idle for a long time. For example, a new car can’t be sold out for a long time and park in the garage in long term. The battery may scrap when is selling because there is a lot of lead sulfide crystalline on the polar plate. So does private car. The host comes back from long-term business trip will find out that he or she can’t drive the car as usual. The severe overcharging and over-discharging will also produce a lot of lead sulfide crystalline on polar plate and scrap the car. If forget to light off for the whole night, it is fatal for the motorcycle battery. Dismantle these fully sealed lead-acid battery, we can see that white lead sulfide crystalline has glued the polar plates together so tight that we can’t take them apart. The battery pack has two volts voltage for each cell (12V battery is made by 6 batteries in series), but now the voltage is closed to 0V.

Whatever sealed or non-sealed battery, all those scrapped for the above reasons can be repaired. Nowadays, the pulse technique can make this irreversible vulcanization into reversible phenomenon. On March 15th,2005, Germany engineer Bingle and AOCHI engineer Ray invented a new generation of battery protective products for half a year – battery repair instrument. After over half year examination, it has good performance. Taking apart the repaired fully sealed lead-acid battery, we can see the white lead sulfide crystalline has nearly disappeared. The voltage returned from 0V before maintenance to normal voltage. At this moment, if charge the battery by normal charging and discharging methods, we can find out that the capacity is back to 90%, or even over 100%

It is reported by American documents that the battery repaired by this pulse technique will has over 5 times longer cycle life. Although there is no such examination at home, and it’s difficult to draw a conclusion for the quality of domestic battery, it is still believed that the battery of electric bicycle produced by regular factory can have two times longer cycle life than before after maintenance.
